Montana State junior Ashley Brumwell notched her second double-double of the season, recording 12 points and ten rebounds to lift the Bobcats to a 67-37 win over Weber State, Thursday night in the Dee Events Center.
“Ashley was an animal for us,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “She was incredible on both ends of the floor. I was really proud with how the starters came out ready to go.”
Montana State (14-4, 8-1) used an early 17-0 run, including seven straight points by Kalli Durham, to put the game out of reach. The Bobcats entered intermission with a 38-18 advantage.
The second stanza featured MSU's bench players as all eight role players logged at least seven minutes. The Montana State bench out-scored Weber State (0-18, 0-9) 33-15.
The highlight for the Bobcats was the return of junior Chelsea Banis, who had been sidelined the entire season to date following hip surgery in the offseason. The 6-4 center from Fairfield finished with four points, one rebound and one block.
“We were able to have fresh legs and rest some kids,” Binford said. “It was nice to have Chelsea get her feet wet and make a contribution. I also thought Jasmine Hommes and Jackie Elliott each gave us a nice lift.”
Aside from Brumwell, the only other Bobcat in double-digits was Rachel Semansky with 11 points on five-of-seven from the field.
For the game, MSU shot 41 percent from the field, while holding Weber State to 24 percent. Montana State also out-rebounded the Wildcats 56-36. The Bobcats forced 20 turnovers, but committed 18 miscues of their own.
“We need to clean up our turnovers,” Binford said. “We didn't do a good job taking care of the ball.”
WSU was led in the loss by Kalie Matthews, who notched six points and ten rebounds.
Montana State will play at Idaho State on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Pocatello.
