Christian Moon leads MSU with 24 points
Senior guard Christian Moon scored a career-high 24 points, leading Montana State to a wire-to-wire 76-68 win over Southern Utah Monday.
Moon's 24 points came in variety pack of styles. He finished 2-for-4 from beyond the three-point circle, 4-for-7 from the line, and his seven baskets inside the three-point circle included a couple of breakaways and several short jumpers.
“That's just what was there,” said Bobcat coach Brad Huse. “We've got a lot of guys that can score. When you look at our stats the last several games, we have had some guys in the 20s, like Christian, in the high teens (in scoring). It's good teamwork. I really like how these guys are playing off each other.”
Moon got the Bobcats off to a good start, hitting a layup on the game's first possession and another layup to give MSU a 6-2 lead. The Bobcats played from in front the entire first half, pushing the lead to nine on a couple of occasions late. Moon's three-pointer with six seconds left in the first half pushed the MSU lead to nine, but Damon Heuir's three-pointer at the buzzer sent the teams to the locker rooms with Montana State holding a 36-31 edge.
“We had several chances to stretch leads and didn't do it,” Huse said. “They made big buckets when they needed to. I thought they were more aggressive getting rebounds, they got some big putbacks.”
The Bobcats led by as many as 11 early in the second half, but the Thunderbirds whittled at the lead until tying it on a Jayson Cheesman layup with 11:23 to play. But Xavier Blount hit a pair of free throws, then Antonio Biglow's jumper pushed the lead back to four. Southern Utah had six possessions with a chance to tie or take the lead from that point to the end of the game, but MSU held off those challenges each time. The Cats nine of their 10 free throws in the game's final minute to ice the win.
“In the last minute or so we got a turnover and were fortunate that they missed a chip shot,” Huse said of a missed Thunderbird layup. “And obviously we made our free throws (late in the game).”
While Moon's big math was the evening's headliner, several Bobcats chipped in. Xavier Blount scored 13 points, while Paul Egwuonwu added 10. Ten differen Bobcats scored.
Damon Heuir led the Thunderbirds with 20 points, his third game with at least that many points this season. Jackson Stevenett added 19 points, and Cheesman 13.
Montana State raises its record to 7-9 overall, 4-4 in the league, and hosts Big Sky co-leader Weber State on Thursday at 7 pm.
