MSU's tough stretch of four games in eight days continues
Montana State gets a look at a Big Sky Conference co-leader for the second time in five days Thursday night, hosting Weber State in Worthington Arena at 7:05 pm.
MSU Game Notes vs. Weber State Bobcat Bio Updates
And for all the talk about who isn't along for the ride this year – guard Damian Lillard, who could be a Wildcat senior this year, is instead tearing up the NBA as one of the Association's top rookies – there are plenty of reasons that Weber State stands 8-0 and is tied with Montana, who WSU plays Saturday night in Missoula. Three Wildcats average in double-digits, and WSU leads the Big Sky in both scoring offense and scoring defense.
“Weber State is a very difficult team to prepare for because they are balanced and deep,” says MSU coach Brad Huse. “They don't have a weakness. They can score from any spot on the floor, and have good players coming off the bench.”
Scott Bamforth leads the Wildcats at 13.4 points per game, but Davion Berry adds 13.3 and Kyle Tresnak 12.2. Weber State owns an average margin scoring in each game of 77.9-to-60.6.
While Weber State and Montana each stand 8-0 in the league and the Bobcats are 4-4, MSU did not shrink from the challenge last Saturday at Montana. The Bobcats led much of the game and took the defending league championship to overtime before losing 76-71.
The young Bobcats, a team featuring four new starters, continues to gel as the season progresses. Nowhere is that more in evidence that in the play of freshman point guard Marcus Colbert. The rookie from Post Falls, Idaho, averages only 5.6 points a game, but in the last 11 games possesses an assist-to-turnover rate of 26-to-6.
While Colbert runs the show from the point, his backcourt-mate Christian Moon has stepped up his scoring. Moon is 37-for-71shooting in the last seven games, averaging 15.5 points in that stretch.
After MSU's contest with Weber State Thursday, the Cats host Idaho State on Saturday at 7:05 pm in Worthington Arena.
