Montana State Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Services and chair of the head men's tennis coach/Director of Tennis Center position, Camie Bechtold, has announced that two candidates have been invited to MSU for on campus interviews, this week.
Jared Burnham, current head men's tennis coach at Weber State, and Luke Shields, a former All-American at Boise State and current assistant with the women's program at the University of Washington will be on campus, Thursday and Friday, respectively.
“We had an outstanding pool of applicants with a vast array of experience,” Bechtold said. “The committee conducted a thorough search and spent countless hours with phone interviews and reference checks. In the end, these individuals, all with outstanding credentials, moved to the top of the list and we look forward to having them on campus and in front of our many Bobcat constituents.”
Burnham has been head men's tennis coach at Weber State since 2004 and has guided the Wildcats to a 25-14 (.641) ledger in Big Sky play the past five seasons, including two runner-up finishes. This season, Burnham mentored Simon Unger to Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player accolades. Burnham also served as an assistant coach at Boise State from 2003-04 and helped the Broncos to a Western Athletic Conference title and a NCAA appearance. He was named the ITA Mountain Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2004. As a collegiate player, Burnham was a three-time team MVP and captain. He earned All-Big West honors in 1999 at Utah State.
Shields is currently the assistant women's coach at the University of Washington. From 2010-11, he served in the same capacity at Marshall University, where he helped the Thundering Herd to a No. 28 national ranking. He began his collegiate coaching experience as an assistant men's coach at Boise State from 2008-10 and helped the Broncos to two NCAA appearances and the 2009 WAC championship. As an outstanding collegiate player at BSU, Shields was the 1997 WAC Player of the Year. In addition, he is a three-time All-America performer and ranked as high as No. 5 in the country in singles and No. 4 in doubles. As a junior player, Shields ranked No.2 in the nation.
Both candidates will be available to the public and Bozeman tennis community during their open forum at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse Hall of Fame room.
