MSU freshman tennis star wins four of six weekend matches
Niklas Brandes hasn't taken long to make an impact on the Montana State men's tennis program.
A freshman from Nordenham, Germany, Brandes earned Big Sky Player of the Week honors for his performance on last weekend's road trip through Utah. Brandes finished 2-1 in singles matches and teamed with Markus Schleuter to post a 2-1 doubles mark.
Brandes defeated Utah State's Sven Poslusny (7-6, 0-6, 6-4) and Utah's Benito Suriano (6-2, 6-4), losing to BYU's nationally-ranked Spencer Smith (6-3, 6-3). In double competition, Brandes and Schleuter defeated the top teams from Utah State and Utah, dropping a decision to BYU.
“Niklas played very well, and showed tremendous confidence,” said MSU coach Mike Phillips. “He showed great confidence, and that rubbed off on the entire team.”
The Bobcats play Boise State this weekend.
