MSU looks for road in at The Nest
Sacramento State's recent hot streak comes as no surprise to Montana State coach Brad Huse, for a couple of reasons.
MSU Game Notes vs. Sacramento State
First, the Hornets' production is beginning to catch up with the team's style of turning each possession into a good look at the basket and making other teams work hard offensively. “They're playing very efficient basketball right now,” Huse said. “They're shooting good percentages and playing with a lot of confidence. Those are the teams that are scariest.”
Sacramento State enters Thursday's contest with the Bobcats looking for its fourth straight victories. The Hornets have topped NAU, Northern Colorado, and an Eastern Washington team that swept MSU this year. “Every week it seems like we're preparing for a team on a hot streak,” Huse said, “and it's that way again. They had two great road wins last week and beat an Eastern Washington team that we've had a lot of trouble with. We'll have our work cut out for us.”
Huse, whose team has lost three straight, is not imagining things. At the time of each team's recent meeting with the Bobcats Montana had won four straight, Idaho State three straight and four of five, and Portland State three straight.
And now Huse tries to coax his team through its recent struggles against a Hornets team on a three-game winning streak, his challenge accentuated by the emotional nature of the two most recent losses.
“We had two tough losses,” Huse said of last weekend. “Idaho State was an emotional loss that could have gone either way. Coming back and playing our rival, which was highly emotional, was tough. In both games we had double-figure deficits and came back. Against Idaho State we had leads late in both regulation and overtime. We just couldn't finish them off. But you're in league play and there's a lot of things we can accomplish yet. You have to respond to losses like you respond to wins, so we have to improve and get ready for the next challenge.”
The next challenge is a Sacramento State squad shooting 47% in its last five games, rising to fifth in the Big Sky in that category in conference games. The team continues to be led by freshman point guard Dylan Garrity, who leads the Big Sky in assists.
Huse says this weekend's road trip, which concludes Saturday afternoon at Northern Colorado, looms large. “This is huge for us. We know that, the guys understand that. Our guys have been extremely resilient. We have a very competitive group. No one's more frustrated than them about losing a couple tough ones at home, and they'll be focused and ready to go on Thursday night and Saturday at Greeley. I know our guys will be ready to compete.
Tipoff Thursday night in Sacramento is 8:05 pm MT.
