MSU tops Utah State, earns individual wins against BYU and Utah
Montana State's men's tennis team highlighted a swing through Utah with a team victory at Utah and impressive individual wins against BYU and Utah.
The Bobcats came from behind to post a win MSU head coach Mike Phillips called “crazy” on Thursday, falling to #49 BYU 6-1 on Friday and to Utah 6-1 on Saturday. After dropping the doubles point in Thursday's win, MSU received big wins at no. one singles (Niklas Brandes earned a 7-6, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Sven Poslusny) and no. two singles (Markus Schleuter topped Matt Sweet 6-3, 6-4). Martiu Marilles topped Nate Ballam 6-4, 7-6 at no. six singles, and Diego Campos Contreras hung on for a 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 win to seal the win.
“It was really a wild match,” Phillips said. “It was a great team win. The guys played great.”
BYU topped the Bobcats 6-1 on Friday, but MSU's Lander Jewett earned a win at no. five singles (6-4, 4-6, 10-7). “Our guys competed really hard, and it was great for Lander to get a win over a player from one of the top teams in the nation,” Phillips said.
The Bobcats also fell to Utah 6-1, but Brandes won at no. one singles, and teamed with Schleuter to earn a doubles match win.
Phillips was pleased with his team's effort throughout the weekend. “The guys competed hard and proved to themselves they can win against outstanding players. It was a good weekend.”
