MSU faces Bears in key contest with league tournament positioning at stake
College basketball coaches spend much of their year talking about taking the season one game at a time and focusing only on what's immediately ahead, but when mid-February arrives the big picture can no longer be avoided. Teams are battling for the post-season, whether it be top national seeds or entry into a conference tournament, February is like a magnifying glass.
MSU Game Notes vs. Northern Colorado
Montana State steps under that magnifying glass on Saturday at noon, facing Northern Colorado in a key Big Sky contest. The game is Altitude Sports' Big Sky Game of the Week, as well.
Montana State upended UNC in Bozeman last month, but the Bears and Bobcats both find themselves battling for their March lives. MSU has dropped four straight and enters Saturday's game 6-6 in Big Sky play. Everyone is chasing Weber State and Montana, each 11-1 and battling for league regular season honors, but the Bobcats are one of three teams tied at 6-6, with another, Eastern Washington stands 5-6.
From that jumble of teams, the third-place and fourth-place squads will host first round tournament games. The fifth-place team will travel to the site of no. four, while whichever team finishes sixth will travel to the third-place squad. Presently, the tie-breaking scenarios are too numerous to detail.
Northern Colorado finds itself in a second and smaller group fighting for entry into the tournament. UNC is tied for suddenly-hot Sacramento State at 4-8. Neither team ispresently in the league's top six, but both are within range.
Saturday's games could further stratify teams, or could create a bigger mess. In addition to MSU's game at Greeley, Eastern Washington visits Weber State, Idaho State travels to NAU, and Montana is at Sacramento State.
