MSU loses second half lead in road loss
Montana State lost a 14-point second half lead and fell Northern Colorado 77-64 in overtime Saturday in Greeley.
Northern Colorado shot 53% in the second half and hit four of its five shots in overtime to rally for the win. Tate Unruh led all players with 20 points for UNC, while Shawn Reid scored 18 for the Bobcats. MSU shot just 38% on the afternoon.
MSU extended its nine-point halftime lead to 42-28 with 17 minutes to play on a short jumper by Jeff Budinich, but the Bears scored the next 12 points to climb back into the game. Montana State maintained the lead until the final two minutes of the game, when Connor Osborne made one of two free throws to put the Bears up 55-54. Xavier Blount tied the score with 58 seconds to play, but Blount missed the second free throw and after the teams exchanged turnovers in the final 10 seconds the proceeded to overtime.
From that point on, the game was no contest. Northern Colorado scored the first seven points of overtime, four from the free throw line, and coasted to the win. It was fitting that UNC staked itself to the decisive advantage from the line, because it owned the stripe throughout the day. Northern Colorado shot 21 more free throws than MSU (35 to 14), and outscored MSU from the line by 17 points.
Montana State falls to 11-13 overall, 6-7 in Big Sky play on the season. Northern Colorado raises its record to 8-16 overall, 5-8 in the league. The Bobcats return to action Wednesday, hosting Weber State at 7:05 pm.
