Fans with football tickets get into the basketball game for free
The turnaround is quick and the challenge is tough, as Montana State hosts San Jose State Saturday at 12 noon in Worthington Arena.
Fans with tickets to the Montana State-Stony Brook FCS Playoff game enter the basketball game for free, and they'll have the opportunity to see an evolving Bobcat team face a talented group of Spartans. Guard James Kinney leads SJSU, averaging 22.8 points and 6.6 rebounds a game. He scored 30 points in the Spartans' 70-57 loss at #10 Kansas on Tuesday.
“San Jose State is a talented team with explosive players,” said Bobcat coach Brad Huse. “This is a team that beat Weber State in overtime.”
Kinney, who is 22nd in the nation in scoring, isn't San Jose State's only weapon. Backcourt-mate D.J. Brown (11.0 points) and forward Chris Cunningham (10.4 points, 9.4 rebounds) give the Spartans inside-outside balance.
Xavier Blount missed MSU's first two games, but has quickly established himself as a versatile scoring threat. He has averaged 14.0 points in his three contests, scoring 20 points inside the three-point circle, 12 points from beyond the arc, and 10 points at the line. He complements Antonio Biglow (14.4 points), the team's mercurial guard, and sixth man Calen Coleman (9.2 points). Forward Flavien Davis provides inside scoring punch, but left Thursday's game with an injury.
“We're continuing to grow and learn as we go,” Huse said. “The guys are gaining experience, and we want to win each time out, but our primary goal is to be playing our best basketball during the conference season.”
San Jose State enters Saturday's game with a 2-3 mark, but in addition to the win over Weber State (68-67 in overtime) the Spartans topped UC Santa Cruz. SJSU lost narrow decisions to New Orleans and Houston in addition to Kansas.
Montana State's final pre-conference tune-up after Saturday's tilt is Thursday against Montana Tech at 7 pm.
