Spartans build big early lead and hold on
James Kinney scored 23 points and San Jose State shot 53% from the floor as the visiting Spartans beat Montana State 82-74 on Saturday.
San Jose State used a 14-2 run early in the first half to take control of the game, and Kinney led a Spartan offense that shot better than 50% in each half and converted 22 of its 26 free throws. The Bobcats, on the other hand, shot 35% from the floor.
Huse said his remains on the defensive end. “We've got to figure out the defensive piece,” he said. “We're a little too porous. This (San Jose State) team makes you pay for your mistakes.”
San Jose State played with a double-digit lead through the first 30 minutes of the game, but the Bobcats whittled the lead in the latter stages of the game. MSU trimmed the margin to seven on a pair of Jamie Stewart free throws with 4:05 to play, then two more Stewart charity tosses cut the lead to four.
The Bobcats missed a fast break opportunity with three minutes left to pull to within a basket and could get no closer. San Jose State hit all six of its free throws from that point to close out the game.
Montana State falls to 1-4 on the season, while the Spartans even their record at 3-3. MSU plays again on Thursday, hosting Montana Tech at 7 pm.
