The MSU men's tennis team raised its record to 3-1 in Big Sky play
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State dropped just two sets in posting a convincing 6-1 Big Sky win over Idaho State in men's tennis at the Anderson-Bobcat Tennis Center on Friday.
MSU swept to the doubles point, then Bobcat senior Pawel Turzanski opened the barrage with a 6-2, 6-2 win at no. one singles against ISU's Danel Barrenechea. Only the Bengals' Dan Buckingham was able to snap the string, recording a 6-4, 7-6 win over Deigo Campos. The Bobcats won each of the other singles matches.
MSU coach Mike Phillips lauded Turzanski for getting MSU started on the right foot, both in doubles play with his partner Fletcher Keyes and in singles competition. “He was awfully good today,” Phillips said. “For the level of competition he was seeing, he was very good.”
Phillips lauded the effort of each of his team's three veteran players, seniors Turzanski and Keyes and junior Alberto Fuentes, who combined for a 3-0 singles record on Friday. “All of our upperclassmen are great leaders and work hard, and have great attitudes,” Phillips said.
Montana State, now 7-11 overall and 3-1 in league play, hosts Portland State, 2-3 in Big Sky play, at 10 am Saturday at the Anderson-Bobcat Tennis Complex. Phillips says the Portland State match, and next week's contests against Montana, Weber State and NAU set up as outstanding competitions. “Our next four matches are against very similar, very solid teams,” Phillips said. “I think our guys are ready, but relaxed.”
