Montana won a hard-fought 4-3 win over MSU on Friday
Montana's Andrew Warren won the clinching match at no. five singles against Montana State freshman Prithiv Sivasubramaniam in UM's 4-3 win over the Bobcats in a Big Sky men's tennis dual at Bozeman's Anderson-Bobcat Tennis Center on Friday.
The Montana win pushed the Bobcats and Grizzlies into a tie in the Big Sky standings at 4-2, with each team facing Weber State and Northern Arizona in league duals on Saturday and Sunday. MSU, UM, Weber and NAU are fighting for the final three spots in the four-team Big Sky Tournament next weekend in Bozeman. Sacramento State has already wrapped up the league's regular season title.
“This was a tough loss, but Montana was a very solid team that is competing very well,” said MSU coach Mike Phillips. We needed to compete a little harder and play a little smarter. Hopefully we will learn from this and fire up for the next two equally tough matches.”
After dropping the doubles point on a grueling 9-7 contest won by UM's David Cysneiros and Mikolaj Caruk over Alberto Fuentes and Diego Campos, MSU won three of the first five singles matches to set up the pivotal match between Warren and Sivasubramaniam. MSU won the first set 6-2, before Warren fought back for 6-1, 6-0 wins to seal UM's win.
Montana State hosts Weber State on Saturday, with the women's match at 10 am and the men's match at 2 pm. NAU invades the Anderson-Bobcat Tennis Center at 9 am (women) and 1 pm (men) on Sunday.
