Blount leads MSU in up-tempo game
Montana State took advantage of Willamette's trapping defense, hitting 10 three-pointers and shooting 53.5% from the floor in a 109-64 win over the Division III Bearcats in Bozeman on Wednesday.
Seven Bobcats scored in double-digits, led by Xavier Blount's 19 points, as MSU rang up 38 field goals and 25 assists. The team also finished with 14 pilfers off 19 Willamette turnovers, holding the visitors to 32.8% shooting.
Bobcat coach Brad Huse said the win took effort to match that expended by the Bearcats, coached by Billings native Kip Ioane, a former player at the school and the brother of Bobcat assistant football coach Kane Ioane. “They press at tempo with aggressive traps and pressure,” Huse said. “For the most part we handled it well. I thought they executed well, especially in the first half, and we had to play good defense to separate.”
That separation came early in the second half. After an opening period in which the Bearcats shot 43% from the field and stayed within 14 points (46-32 at halftime), MSU opened the second half with vigor. After a layup by Joseph Jackson that cut MSU's lead to 46-34, the Bobcats scored 11 straight points to erase all doubt. The flurry came in emphatic form, with back-to-back dunks by Jourdain Allou pushing the lead to 18 and, moments later, a dunk by Mohammed Fall.
Jamie Stewart scored 15 points for MSU, Fall tallied 13, and Michael Dison and Shawn Reid each scored 12. Tre Johnson and Christian Moon each added 10. Reid grabbed nine rebounds, while Fall added seven, leading MSU to a 53-to-34 rebounding advantage.
Montana State raised its effort to 5-3 on the season and won its third straight game, while Willamette fell to 1-7. MSU hosts UC Riverside on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.
