MSU launches conference season with pair of home tilts
Brad Huse hopes home cooking heats up his Bobcat basketball teams offense, and there's evidence to support that theory.
MSU Game Notes vs. Eastern Washington
"We've been better scoring the basketball at home this year, and I'm hoping that gets us going offensively this week," Montana State's sixth-year head coach said on the eve of the 2011-12 Big Sky Conference men's basketball season Tuesday against Eastern Washington. "I hope we play with good energy."
Montana State shoots 47% in its five home games this season, averaging 87.4 points. Even removing the lop-sided wins against non-Division I opponents, MSU shoots 43% and averages 73 points a game. Xavier Blount has led the way at home, scoring 18.2 points per game.
Rod Singleton, MSU's only returning starter from last season, knows that the time of year for increased intensity has arrived. "In non-conference games the team that plays together and executes the best usually wins," said MSU's starting point guard. "But in conference games teams have you scouted, so the team that wins is usually the team that plays the hardest and still executes."
Montana State and its two weekend opponents, Eastern and Portland State, are among four teams entering league play with either 5-6 or 6-6 non-conference records.
"Eastern Washington is very talented, very athletic," Huse said. "They have one of the league's best newcomers in Collin Chiverton. They shoot a lot of three-pointers and lead the league in offensive rebounding. They are a very difficult team to match up with."
Tipoff Wednesday is 7 pm in Worthington Arena. The Bobcats complete the league-opening homestand with Portland State on Friday at 7 pm.
