Bobcats Fall to Eastern Washington in League Opener

MSU shoots just 39% in dropping fourth straight
Even Christmas break couldn't help Montana State shake its recent shooting woes.
The Bobcats shot below 40% for the fourth straight game and Eastern Washington guard Cliff Colimon scored more than 20 points for the fourth time in the last six games as the Eagles topped the MSU 82-66 on Wednesday. The game was each team's Big Sky Conference opener.
Eastern Washington eliminated much of the suspense early, jumping out to a 14-3 lead five minutes into the game and never relinquishing control. The Eagles shot 50% from the floor and 40.7% from three-point range, limiting MSU to 38.9% shooting.
“Our shooting percentage, again, is way too low,” Huse said. “Some of those are shots we need to make to stay in the game.”
MSU coach Brad Huse credited Eastern Washington's defense. “I thought some of it was dictated by their pressure,” Huse said. “We had some bad turnovers early that led to some easy (EWU baskets). Then, the worse thing that can happen is that (an opponent's) main players get hot early, and that happened, particularly with (Cliff) Colimon. Any time they needed a basket, he got it.”
Colimon led all players with 22 points, and nailed a game-high four three-pointers. “He made some nice plays tonight at opportune times, necessary plays,” Huse said.
The Bobcats staged runs in each half, but Eastern responded each time. “We just couldn't get stops,” he said. “A big part of that was Colimon, and they got the ball to spots where they thought they had advantages. That proved right at certain times. They made veteran plays, tough plays, and held us off.”
The Bobcat loss overshadowed a strong performance by junior guard Christian Moon. He scored a career-high 20 points, hitting three of his five three-point attempts and all seven of his free throws. “Moon had a great game,” Huse said. “He's played consistently. He's reliable. Certainly he's a great shooter, and he's been really consistent for us.”
Montana State returns to action Friday night, hosting Portland State. The Vikings fell in Missoula 75-64 on Wednesday night.
