New Mexico races to large early lead
New Mexico raced to a 53-16 halftime lead and never looked back, rolling to a 91-46 victory over Montana State in Albuquerque on Tuesday.
MSU's frigid shooting in the first half coincided with a torrid Lobo offense to produce New Mexico's dominant opening stanza. The Bobcats shot just 21% before the intermission, while New Mexico hit a scorching 65.5% of its first half field goals.
Lobo guard Tony Snell scored 24 points on Tuesday to lead all players, while Drew Gordon scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Four Lobos scored in double-digits, while all 11 UNM players who checked into the game broke into the scoring column.
Tre Johnson led the Bobcats with 16 points and six rebounds, while Christian Moon was the only other Bobcat in double digits with 12 points.
New Mexico's defense was effective in both limiting quality Bobcat shot attempts and taking the ball away. Montana State turned the ball over 21 times, and New Mexico turned the ensuing possessions into 27 points.
New Mexico's 1,000th home victory raised the team's 2011-12 record to 9-2. MSU falls to 5-6 on the season. After a brief break for Christmas, the Bobcats return to action in Worthington Arena on December 28 against Eastern Washington. That game is the first Big Sky game of 2011-12 for both schools. Tipoff is 7 pm.
