Huse bests Krystkowiak in matchup with former boss
Rod Singleton scored 18 points and Montana State used strong starts in each half to race past the University of Utah 70-64 in Salt Lake City on Saturday.
MSU used an efficient offensive attack to topple the Pac 12 Utes. The Bobcats shot better than 50% in each half, finishing at 52% for the game. Tre Johnson (15 points) and Mohammed Fall (12) joined Singleton in double-digits scoring.
Four different players scored as MSU jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game. The Utes chipped away and eventually led late in the half. But Mohammed Fall's short jumper and Tre Johnson's three-point play gave MSU a 34-31 lead at the intermission.
Fall's jumper and a trey by Singleton gave MSU a five-point lead in the second stanza, but the Utes stayed close and led in the middle portion of the half. With the game tied 55-55 with six-and-a-half minutes to play, Singleton and Johnson hit jumpers to give MSU a lead.
Playing the closing minutes in front, the Bobcats held Utah at bay. Christian Moon's three-pointer with just under a minute left triggered a 9-3 MSU run that sealed the win. The Cats were 6-6 from the line in the last minute.
The win gave Bobcat coach Brad Huse a win over his friend and former boss, Larry Krystkowiak. Huse served on Krystkowiak's University of Montana coaching staff. The win also snapped a 16-game Utah winning streak in the series, and gave the Bobcats their first victory over the Utes since the 1937 Rocky Mountain Conference Championship.
Montana State hosts Seattle on Tuesday in Worthington Arena.
