Shawn Reid scores 19 points to lead MSU in close loss
Montana State's furious late comeback wasn't enough to offset 18% shooting in the first half, as Arizona State topped the Bobcats 78-72 in each team's season opener in Tempe Friday afternoon.

“Hopefully the second half is who we are,” said MSU coach Brad Huse after his team sliced into a 12-point deficit in the game's final four minutes. “In the first half we were really tight, and I think it showed in our shooting. We shot the ball much better in the second half.”
Trent Lockett led the Sun Devils with 17 points and 10 rebounds. ASU shot 45% to Montana State's 34%, although MSU improved to 47% shooting after halftime. Shawn Reid scored 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting for MSU, while Xavier Blount scored 13 points with six rebounds. Rod Singleton added 12 points and dished out three assists.
“We have to tighten up our execution,” Huse said, “but we have some guys that can score. Arizona State has big, athletic players, it's just a different level of athlete, but we can hit teams from a lot of different angles.”
Arizona State closed the first half on a 10-2 run to take a 33-21 lead into the intermission, but the Bobcats responded. MSU pulled to within three early in the second half, but the Sun Devils led 70-58 with 2:46 to play. But a jumper by Reid and layups by Blount and Singleton drew the Bobcats to within six at the 52 second mark.
Singleton answered a Sun Devil free throw with two of his own, but Trent Lockett hit a pair of charity tosses to expand the lead to seven. Christian Moon's three-pointer brought the Bobcats to within four with 26 seconds to play, but a free throw and layup by Keala King gave ASU its 78-72 win.
“Our guys are not short on fight,” Huse said. “That will help us down the road.”
The Bobcats open the home portion of their schedule Sunday at 7 pm, hosting Northern New Mexico.
