MSU's men welcome three accomplished veterans, five solid newcomers
Montana State opens the 2011 men's tennis season on the road this weekend, travelling to Colorado's Front Range for a trio of matches capped by the league-opener at Northern Colorado on Sunday.
The Bobcats ride a roster blending match-tempered veterans and talented newcomers into the 2011 season. Seniors Pawel Turzanski and Fletcher Keyes enter the season as captains, while junior Alberto Fuentes also returns.
Five of MSU's eight players enter their first season as Bobcats, including three true freshmen, a redshirt freshman and a transfer. And while 11th-year head coach Mike Phillips is excited about the newcomers, he's thrilled about his returners.
“I really like our returning players,” Phillips said. “Fletcher and Pawel are our captains, and they are both veterans who have competed at a high level for us. Alberto Fuentes has also improved throughout his time at MSU, and we expect a great season from each of those three.”
Former Helena High star Lander Jewett transfers to MSU from the University of the Redlands, and brings experience to the squad. Prithiv Sivasubramanium redshirted at MSU last year, and is expected to step right into lineup contention. The Bobcats also welcome a pair of international newcomers, Diego Campos Contreras from Mexico and Markus Schleuter from Germany, via Spain. “i think each of these guys will impact us positively,” Phillips said.
