It might not feel like golf in Bozeman, but the Montana State women's golf team opens the season this weekend at the Red Rocks Invite in Sedona, Arizona. The two-day meet hosted by Northern Arizona takes place at the Oakcreek Country Club February 27-28. Saturday will be a shot gun start at 1 p.m., while Sunday will start at 8 a.m. with a shot gun start with 18 holes played each day.
The field for the 2010 Red Rocks Invitational will include 18 teams: Cal Poly, CS-Bakersfield, Eastern Michigan, Grand Canyon, Louisiana Monroe, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, North Dakota State, Portland, South Carolina Upstate, Southern Utah, UC-Riverside, Utah Valley, Western Michigan, Western New Mexico and Xavier. Four teams return for a fifth consecutive season to the event, including Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona and Western Michigan.
Head coach Leslie Spalding is looking forward to this meet as an extension of the success the team had in the fall.
“I think we are more prepared than maybe we have been in the past,” Spalding said. “This will be a tournament to build on, I think, simply because we haven't played since the fall.”
The MSU roster for the invite is based on scores from the fall season. Freshman Molly Dorans will golf in the number one spot followed by fellow freshmen Melissa Hultstrand and Kelly O'Brien. Playing fourth will be sophomore Leslie McGetrick and fifth will be senior Elise Nelsen. Katie Michunovich will be entered as an individual player. Each team takes the top four scorers towards team results.
Last year, MSU's Kelly Gillum won the individual title with a four-over par 148 helped by a one-over par 73 in the final round. Michigan won the team title with a 33-over par 609.
