The Montana State volleyball team used a quick offense, a solid block and a disciplined defense to cruise to a 25-10, 25-12, 25-22 win over Sacramento State, Friday night in Shroyer Gym.
The win was the tenth for the Bobcats this season and the first time MSU has reached double-digit victories since 2005. The win was also Montana State's (10-10, 3-5) fourth straight on its home court and the first victory over Sacramento State since Oct. 1, 2004.
“We are establishing ourselves as a good home team,” said MSU head coach Sara Schaub. “We have a strong tradition of winning in Shroyer Gym, and the crowd was terrific in helping us get a big conference win.”
MSU jumped on Sacramento State (11-11, 4-3) early cruising to the opening set win hitting .407 from the floor, while holding the Hornets to -.100. The second stanza featured much of the same as Sacramento State was held to negative hitting numbers for the second consecutive set.
The final set featured 11 ties before the Bobcats broke away from a 15-all contest with a 4-0 run sparked by two kills via sophomore Taylar Barney. Sacramento State held off three set points before Alex Penewell and Sarah Horton finished off the match with a block.
“It was a solid, overall team effort,” Schaub said. “We were getting good contributions from all positions and Sacramento State couldn't key on any one player.
“We were patient on defense, served well and had a great block,” Schaub said. “It (the win over Sacramento State) goes to show how much parity there is in the Big Sky Conference this season.”
Leading the MSU attack was Barney with a match-high 10 kills. Barney finished hitting .476 from the field, while adding six blocks.
For the match, Montana State hit .298 from the floor, while holding the Hornets to .047. MSU also held advantages in aces and blocks.
Bobcat middle blockers Chelsea Oemcke and Penewell combined for 10 kills and 11 blocks. Sophomore setter Jennifer Lundquist dished out 29 assists, while chipping in seven digs and two aces and senior libero Meghan Albiston led MSU with 10 digs.
Sacramento State was guided by Kayla Beal with eight kills and two digs.
MSU will play a non-conference match at Seattle U on Sunday afternoon.
