Bobcats Perform Well at USAFA, Prepare for Weekend Tournament at Boise State

Newcomers lead the way at Bedford Cup
BOZEMAN, Mont. (Sept. 22, 2026) – Montana State newcomers excelled while the team's veteran core showed improvement as the Bobcat opened their fall men's tennis season at the U.S. Air Force Academy's Bedford Cup in the Mountains last weekend.
"Our new guys were awesome," said Montana State head coach Mateus Ceolin. "Reuben (de Klerk) and Gareth (Igesund) made it all the way to the doubles finals and competed extremely well." The two newcomers finished 4-1 in doubles play and runners-up, while de Klerk also rolled up a 4-1 record in singles competition.
Several 2025-26 regulars also performed well in Colorado, with sophomore Max Calaquian posting a 3-1 singles record while senior Andre Stewart and junior Eddie Biss each finished the weekend 3-2. "Max finished the weekend 3-1 in singles competed extremely well into the last day of the tourney. I'm happy with Andre and Eddie working through a lot of things in doubles and battling all weekend long in singles."

Ceolin called last weekend's competition the 2026-27 team's "first building block." The next brick in the foundation comes this weekend at Boise State's Dar Walters Classic which begins on Friday. The strong regional field includes BYU, Utah State, Boise State, and several Big Sky foes.
Ceolin said last weekend's performance set the bar high for the final four fall tournaments. "Last weekend set a very high expectation for us. Beating some really solid teams, making it to the finals of doubles, that showed what this team can accomplish."
With one productive weekend on the ledger, Ceolin looks for the seven players traveling to Boise to maintain that level of performance. "I want to see us find a level of consistency," he said. "Can we do things the same way again for a second straight weekend? That's what I want to see, the work habits and the way we do things translate into a high level of play."
Handling defeat is part of the growing process," Ceolin said. "Tennis is a sport where you lose every week unless you win the tournament, so let's go win the tournament. And if that doesn't happen, let's respond in the right way and lean on those good habits we're building."
Ceolin expects the maturity of his third team to carry the moment when his team arrives in Boise. "I like the way they go about their business," he said. "They approached the weekend very well, worked, competed, acted in a professional manner. So now let's do it again."
