BOZEMAN, Mont. (Oct. 5, 2026) – Montana State faces one of its biggest challenges of the fall this week, when the Bobcats travel to BYU for the 2026 ITA Mountain Regionals.
Â
MSU squares off against the best teams in the region this weekend. Squads from BYU, Boise State, Denver, Utah and most Big Sky schools compete to advance to the national tournament.
Â
Head coach Mateus Ceolins is looking forward to the task at hand for his athletes. "This is a very challenging tournament," he said, "with the best teams in our region. Many of them are in the top 50 in the country, and some have been ranked in the top 20 in the past. This is a very important tournament in our fall schedule."
Â
Montana State's week begins with senior Andre Stewart and sophomore transfer Reuben de Klerk opening in the main draw, while junior Eddie Biss, freshman Gareth Igesund, sophomore Max Calaquian and sophomore Ethan Masselis entered in qualifying matches.
Â
Andre Stewart faces Izan Orgiles of Boise State, to whom he lost in three sets in Boise earlier in the fall. de Klerk squares off with BSU's Stewart Aronson, while Biss meets Sebastiano Cressi of UNLV, Calaquian plays Paul Janson of Idaho, Igesund squares off against Otto Schreiner of BYU and Masselis faces Luka Vujacic of Idaho State.
Â
"None of these are easy draws," Ceolin said. "We understand that everything that we do during the fall and during these tournaments will either set us for failure or success come the spring semester. I really want to see our guys compete and fight hard. I want to see a consistent approach to training and matches. Not every day will be perfect, and we're emphasizing process over results."
Â
The Bobcats competed well at the Dar Walters Invitational in Boise a week ago. Veterans Biss and Stewart put together strong weekends, Ceolin said. "I'm extremely happy for Eddie having two really good singles wins back-to-back fs. BYU and Idaho. Eddie I one of those guys who have worked so hard on developing his tennis and he is seeing some of those results. And Andre had one of the best tennis weekends I have seen him play. He's a workhorse that has spent so many hours and put in so many reps in these last few years.
Â
Stewart and Biss each won three of their four singles matches. Igesund won all four of his singles matches, while de Klerk won three of four. "Our newcomers also crushed the weekend," Ceolin said. "They went 3-1 in the overall dominant duo format, beating some really good players from Boise State and Idaho. I was impressed by how much growth Gareth showed in one week. This was only his second college tournament, and the level of tennis and maturity that he showed comparted to last week was significantly higher. On Sunday, he saved five match points on the way to winning his match on a super tiebreaker, 12-10. That is extremely difficult to do."
Â
The Bobcats finished the weekend 6-5 in a format pairing two players from each team in a doubles match and two singles matches. The winner of the two-of-three pod took that point. Igesund and de Klerk took three of their four matchups. Stewart and Biss finished 2-2, while Calaquian and Masselis finished 1-2.
Â
"I'm really proud of the grit and toughness the entire group showed" in Boise, Ceolin said, "especially on Sunday when your body is tired and you have already played a lot of tennis over the previous two days. We played a total of four match tiebreakers on Sunday, and were successful in three of them. I think that shows that third group is not going anywhere when things get tough. They were willing to dig in and find a way."
Â
Still, Ceolin said the fall in general, and this week's event in particular, serves a larger purpose than results. "This is not the tournament we are trying to peak for," he said. "Our focus remains peaking in April during our conference season and for the Big Sky Tournament. This week is another building block on the strong foundation that the guys have been working on this fall."
Â
Play begins on Tuesday at the BYU Tennis Courts. Find results here throughout the week.
