Bottom of the lineup comes through with turnaround wins to clinch victory
BOZEMAN, Mont. (March 21, 2026) – Different cast of characters, same bottom-of-the-lineup magic.
Trailing 3-2, Montana State's Eddie Biss took a win at No. 5 singles and Max Calaquian captured a three-set come-from-behind thriller at the sixth spot to launch the Bobcats to a 4-3 win over Idaho in Moscow on Saturday. The victory, without a pair of injured starters, snapped a 22-match road losing streak.
"I'm proud of the way the guys competed and stayed together from start to finish," said MSU head coach Mateus Ceolin. "It wasn't perfect, but the fight and energy made the difference."
Idaho opened the scoring by capturing the doubles point. The Vandals took wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, then Chetanna Amadike topped MSU's Yassin Elaroussy 6-3, 6-2 at the top singles spot to give the Vandals a 2-0 lead.
Bobcat junior Andre Stewart got the Bobcats on track with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles, then Oumar Diallo's 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over Mikolaj is at the third ladder position knotted the score. Idaho's Gabriel Moroder topped Camille Chantron 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 at No. 4 to push the Vandals within one point of the win and set the stage for Biss and Calaquian.
MSU's David Ismanescu and Ethan Masselis had combined for an 11-4 record at lower ladder spots, giving the Bobcats punch at the bottom of the lineup throughout the season. In their stead, though, Biss has won three of his four singles matches played to completion and Calaquian two of three.
Montana State raised its record to 5-9 on the season and evened its league mark at 1-1 with win. Idaho falls to 8-12 on the season, 2-2 in the Big Sky. The Bobcats return to action next Saturday at Idaho State.
