Throwers, distance runners impress in Bozeman on Friday
Hatleberg improved to fourth in program history indoors in the shot put, Moravitz improved her standing as the No. 5 800-meter runner indoors, and Koos bettered her own No. 7 mile time in a strong day for the Bobcat's distance and throws crews. The Cats also set four new facility records in their fourth indoor meet of the season.
"It was a fitting at the Carignan Classic that the throwers had a really good meet," Dale Kennedy Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Lyle Weese said. "It was fun celebrating Coach Mike Carignan and having so many former throwers and former athletes in attendance. Easton Hatleberg had a great day in the shot and broke the 60-foot mark. Eva Koos built on a nice mile race two weeks ago with a really outstanding race today. Kalei Moravitz also followed up on a great race two weeks ago with another PR in the 800. She has created some momentum, and it is exciting to see what she can do over the coming weeks. Billy Cunningham put together a quality series and had a bit of a breakthrough in the long jump, which was really exciting to see. Overall, it seems like our team is taking steps forward and building toward the conference championships.
"Next week will be a big week for us with our distance and throwers heading to the Husky Classic in Seattle and the jumpers and sprinters heading to the Don Kirby Invite in Albuquerque. These meets have been a focus and will give us a pretty good idea of where we are at heading toward the conference championships."
Moravitz crossed the finish line with a converted time of 2:08.69 to win the 800-meter run, shattering her own facility record and improving her own No. 5 time in program history. She led a group of four Bobcats in the top five as Annie Kaul clocked a 2:11.15 for second, Iris Rogel finished fourth with a 2:12.24, and Sophia Miller posted a 2:12.68 to take fifth.
Koos clocked a time of 4:46.67 in the women's mile to win the event while improving her own No. 7 time in program history. She improved her personal-best time by nearly a second while breaking her own facility record by three seconds.
Sydney Brewster continued her undefeated run in the shot put, recording a throw of 16.34m/53-7.50 on her first attempt to win for the fourth time this season. Emma Brensdal finished behind her in second with a mark of 15.12m/49-7.25, and Maggie Hillis took fourth with a throw of 13.56m/44-6.00.
Ryan Harrington led a Montana State sweep of the top four positions in the men's mile, clocking a converted time of 4:03.42 to lead the Cats across the finish line. Quinn Newman placed second with a time of 4:06.67, Eli Boppart clocked a third-place time of 4:08.76, and Blaise Snow posted a time of 4:11.59 to finish fourth.
Sam Ells won the 3,000m by 22 seconds thanks to his converted time of 8:07.78. That time helped him shatter the facility record by nearly 14 seconds. Ben Saelens also finished in the top five, clocking an 8:44.18 for fourth place.
Jenavieve Lynch earned another victory in the weight throw, posting a mark of 18.79m/61-7.75 to win the event by nearly three feet. She recorded the mark on her third attempt.
The Bobcats' 60m dash records came within a hair of falling on Friday night as Stryder Todd-Fields posted a time of 6.79 to finish third on the men's side and Jaeden Wolff clocked a time of 7.45 to finish second in the women's race. Those times brought Todd-Fields and Wolff 0.01 and 0.02 seconds away from matching their own program records in the event, respectively.
Matt Furdyk posted the top collegiate mark in the weight throw, finishing second overall with a mark of 19.81m/65-0.00. He reached the mark on his second throw.
Tatum Richards and Libby Hansen were also the top collegiate finishers in the pole vault, tying for second overall with top clearances of 3.98m/13-0.75.
Billy Cunningham recorded a runner-up finish in the long jump with a mark of 7.13m/23-4.75. The jump came on his sixth and final attempt.
