Vandals use strong defensive effort to stymie Montana State
(Feb. 4, 2026) – Idaho's Kyra Gardner scored 18 points and the Vandals out-rebounded Montana State 57-to-43 to secure a 73-70 overtime win over Montana State in Moscow, Idaho on Thursday.
The win boosts Idaho (18-5 overall, 9-1 Big Sky) into first place in the Big Sky standings. The Bobcats (16-6, 9-2) took the previous matchup between the two in Bozeman.
"Idaho played a great game," said Montana State head coach Tricia Binford. "They had a good scout, they did some interesting things defensively on our point guards that were effective, and they had a good crowd and good environment."
The Vandals shot 35.5 percent on the night, 40 percent from three-point range, and made five free throws more than the Cats. But Idaho's defensive effort was the story. Montana State shot just 30.3% from the floor, it's third-lowest shooting percentage of the season. The two lower were against Oregon and Oregon State.
The Bobcats scored the first five points of overtime, with Ella Johnson making three out of four free throws and Addison Harris converting a spinning layup in the period's first 2:34. At that point, Idaho was 0-for-3 shooting with a turnover.
But the Vandals found their footing when Debora dos Santos made a layup and converted the and-one free throw. Hope Hassmann then made two free throws, and after a steal by Hassmann she found Ana Beatriz Passos Alves da Silva for an and-one and the lead.
The first half was a grind that belonged to the defenses. The Bobcats held Idaho to 40 percent shooting and forced 14 turnovers, but mustered only 27 percent shooting and turned the ball over eight times. MSU surpassed 33 percent shooting only in the fourth quarter (38.5 percent).
Montana State stayed in the game with its pressure defense, forcing 27 Idaho turnovers. Still, Binford wasn't pleased with her teams execution on that end. "We need to be more sound defensively, especially in the halfcourt," she said.
Taylee Chirrick registered her fifth 4-by-5 stat line of the season, getting at least five points, rebounds, assists and steals. She finished with 15 points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Addison Harris also scored 15 points for MSU.
Dos Santos scored 14 points and snared 17 rebounds for the Vandals. No carom was bigger than the offensive board she grabbed with UI leading by two and 21 seconds remaining. That led eventually to two Hassmann made free throws to extend the lead to four, and MSU could get no closer than three when Chirrick hit a triple at the buzzer.
Montana State visits Eastern Washington on Saturday at 2 pm. The Vandals host Montana.
