Montana State looks to extend winning streak in The Well
BOZEMAN, Mont. (Feb. 27, 2026) – Montana State continues to chase several things when the Bobcats play their final regular season road game at Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon, but head coach Tricia Binford has only one goal in mind.
And it's the same one she's preached for months.
"We need to stay focused on getting better," she said between her team's win at Portland State on Thursday and the Saturday matinee. "Getting back to our attacking mindset in the fourth quarter and finishing that game was a positive, but there are lots of things for us to fix. Our best basketball is still in front of us, and that's what we're working toward."
The Bobcats enter the final two regular season games, Saturday's 3 pm road tilt at Sacramento State (13-16 overall, 7-9 Big Sky) at 1 pm and Monday's home finale against Northern Arizona, as one of two teams battling for the regular season league title. Montana State (21-6, 14-2) trails Idaho by one game in the league standings.
Montana State has clinched the ninth 20-win regular season in program history, and a spot among the top four teams in program history in terms of regular season victories is within reach. Last year's team entered the Big Sky Tournament with 27 wins, the 1988 squad won 24, and the 2020 team entered tourney play with 23. Six of MSU's nine 20-win regular seasons lie on Binford's resume.
MSU's 21st-year head coach knows Saturday's foe presents a challenge. "Sacramento State is playing very good basketball right now," she said. "They'll draw energy from playing at home and we know they're looking to play their best basketball heading into next week, like every team is."
The Cats have won five straight games, scratching out thee wins away from Bozeman in that time. MSU looks for its third straight win at Sacramento State on Saturday, but its first in the Hornets' new home, The Well. The 3 pm MT contest streams on ESPN+ and is broadcast around Montana and on the Varsity app on the Bobcat Radio Network.
