Bobcats earn 4-1 victory over Cougars on Tuesday in Palm Desert
PALM DESERT, Calif. --- The Montana State women's golf team earned its second match play victory in as many days at Mountain Classic Match Play, earning a statement 4-1 victory over Washington State to punch its ticket to Wednesday's championship match at the Classic Club.
Eva Heinz and Norah Seidl each earned their second win of the tournament while Lauren Greeny and Maddie Montoya also chipped in victories to help the Bobcats advance on Tuesday. The Cats are set to face Nevada for the tournament title on Wednesday as they seek their second team championship of the season.
"Total team effort and gritty play today from all seven ladies," head coach Brittany Basye said. "They came to play today, and I'm super proud of them all for staying present and having good attitudes. They now have put themselves into a position to get the W. Another opportunity to keep playing, get better, and to grit it out."
Greeny dominated her match against Anya Cedo, 6&5, going 1-up on the first hole and never relinquishing the lead. She won holes 1, 2, and 3 before conceding No. 4 to Cedo. Greeny then bounced back with wins on No. 5 before later taking Nos. 8 and 9 back-to-back before making the turn. She took hole No. 12 before the two golfers halved No. 13, giving Greeny the 6&5 victory to count as the Bobcats' first point of the day.
Montoya followed up Greeny's win with a victory of her own, defeating Hannah Harrison, 3&2. The two golfers halved each of the first six holes before Montoya won Nos. 7 and 8 to go 2-up, a lead she maintained over the next two holes. Harrison took No. 11 before Montoya bounced back with wins on Nos. 12 and 13. She remained 3-up across the next three holes to secure the victory on hole No. 16.
Seidl's match went to hole No. 17 as she came away with a 2&1 victory over Agnes Brink. Seidl went 1-down on the first hole but pulled the match to all-square by winning hole No. 4. She took Nos. 7 and 9 to make the turn 2-up before Brink evened the match by winning Nos. 10 and 13. Seidl immediately responded with back-to-back wins on Nos. 14 and 15 and secured her match on No. 17 after halving each of her final two holes of the day. The point marked the clincher for the Bobcats.
Heinz defeated Grace Rubelsky, 3&1, to pick up the final point for the Bobcats over the Cougars. She won three-straight holes from Nos. 2-4, followed by two more on Nos. 6 and 7, to go 5-up early in the match. Rubelsky then secured three of the next four holes to leave Heinz 2-up by hole No. 11. Heinz took No. 14, and Rubelsky secured No. 15 as the match came down to the wire before Heinz clinched her win by taking No. 17 to go 3-up with one hole remaining, ending the match.
Sailor Graham's match against Kaitlyn Helm came down to the final hole, but Helm ultimately finished 1-up to earn the Cougars' lone point of the day, taking back-to-back holes to win the match for Washington State.
Ashleigh Wilson and Lauren Nau each competed individually for the Bobcats, with Wilson defeating Boise State's Jaime Hards, 1-up, and Nau falling in a 2-down decision to Boise State's Jillian Hui. After heading into the final hole all-square Wilson bested Hards on No. 18 to clinch her victory in Palm Desert.
