Bobcat duo to resume competition at 8 a.m. MT on Tuesday
OMAHA, Neb. --- Montana State junior golfers Elvira Flodström and Nadia Sanz Ouezzani opened the Big O Classic with top-five results through day one of competition on Monday, concluding the first two rounds in second and fifth place, respectively.
Â
The Bobcat duo, who are competing individually in Omaha, Neb., this week, carded 36-hole scores of 148 and 153 on the par-72, 6,076-yard Oak Hills Country Club course. The Cats will resume play at 8 a.m. MT on Tuesday as they look to close the gap to the individual lead.
Â
"I'm so proud of both of the ladies and how they represented Montana State," Montana State assistant coach Morgan Ryan said. "Ellie played confident and steady in both rounds. Nadia worked her way back into a good position. It got very windy for the middle 18, and both Nadia and Ellie managed the course very well. They're in a great spot, and I have great confidence they will finish strong tomorrow."
Â
Flodström carded a pair of 74s to conclude Monday at 4-over 148. The junior shot par or better on 15 of her 18 holes in round one while posting birdies on holes 11 and 1. Her best stretch of golf included shooting par or better on nine of her final 10 holes to finish the opening round in third place. Flodström then improved to second place by the end of round two after carding another two birdies and two five-hole bogey-free stretches to wrap up the afternoon.
Â
Sanz Ouezzani posted a 78 in her opening round before improving to a 75 in round two, finishing Monday with a score of 9-over 153. She posted birdies on holes 11 and 8 in the first round while adding pars on each of the first four holes, reaching the midway point of day one in a tie for 13th place. The junior birdied three times in the second round as part of a four-hole par-or-better stretch from holes 14 through 17 to climb eight spots into a tie for fifth place.
Â
"I had a chance to talk with the ladies after their round, but Coach Morgan has been with them throughout the day while I'm back in Bozeman with our other five players. From everything I've heard, they played some really gritty golf today," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "The wind was blowing, and they were pleased with how they handled the conditions. They also mentioned that some of the things we've been working on in practice really paid off today, and as a coach, that's always great to hear.Â
Â
"I love their attitude and the way they're competing. Coach Morgan is doing a great job with both of them, and I'm excited to see them finish strong tomorrow. The message is simple: stay gritty, take it one shot at a time, and compete through all 18 holes. Then we'll see where we stand. I'm proud of the opportunity they're making the most of and excited to see what tomorrow brings!"
Â
Flodström (4-over 148) sits nine strokes back of Omaha's Eden Larson (5-under 139) of the individual lead with 18 holes to play. Texas Southern's Carmen Pate is in third place at 7-over 151, Carmen Pate sits in fourth at 8-over 152, and Sanz Ouezzani shares fifth place with North Dakota's Payton Stocker at 9-over 153.
Â
Flodström and Sanz Ouezzani are paired with golfers from Iowa Western and will tee off from hole 10 at 8 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. MT, respectively. Live scoring is available via Golfstat.
