Montana State fifth on team leaderboard after opening day of competition
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The Montana State women's golf team opened its 2025-26 campaign on Monday, competing in the first two rounds of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational on the campus of the University of New Mexico.
The Bobcats combined to shoot 15-over 591 over 36 holes to open the tournament, placing themselves fifth out of 15 teams with one round to play on the par-72 course. Montana State posted a 297 in the first round, good for a share of sixth in the field, and closed out the afternoon with a 294 to move to fifth on the team leaderboard.
Senior Lauren Greeny and junior Eva Heinz led the way for the Bobcats on the tournament's first day, posting 1-over 145 performances to earn a share of seventh place through two rounds. Greeny totaled eight birdies over 36 holes and is second in the field in par 5 scoring with a 5-under clip while Heinz added six birdies of her own. Maddie Montoya and Ashleigh Wilson are tied for 44th place at 8-over 152 while Norah Seidl sits in a tie for 75th at 15-over 159.
Greeny paced the Bobcats during the first round, sinking six birdies en route to an even-par 72. Heinz shot par or better on 15 of 18 holes in the opening round, posting birdies on holes 9 and 14 to card a 1-over 73. Montana State also counted a 2-over 74 from Montoya and a 78 from Wilson to open the day.
The Bobcats got off to a hot start in the afternoon as Heinz sunk a birdie on hole 17 followed by Greeny, Montoya, Wilson, and Seidl adding one each on 18. Heinz posted four birdies in the second round, including back-to-back on holes 14 and 15 to close the day, to lead the Bobcats with a 72. The Cats also counted a 73 from Greeny, a 74 from Wilson, and a 75 from Seidl in a strong second round.
Sacramento State posted rounds of 281 and 294 on Monday and currently leads the field at 1-under par. South Alabama finished the day at 3-over 579 while Cal State Fullerton (583), Long Beach State (587), and Montana State (591) round out the top five on the team leaderboard.
UNLV's Foong Zi Yu, Sacramento State's Ella Kraft, and Long Beach State's Emma Kang are in a three-way tie for the individual lead at 5-under par.
Montana State is paired with Long Beach State and Northern Arizona for Tuesday's final round and will tee off from holes 4 through 7 in a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring is available here.
