“I thought Kenzie (Jackson) did a wonderful job for the situation that she's in,” Houk said. “She's been put in a difficult situation. She hasn't been trained as a setter. That's not what her expected role on this team is.”
Nevada outhit Montana State .333 to .122 and held a sizeable 48-26 advantage in kills to cruise to a 25-18, 25-20, 25-19 win over the Bobcats in front of a season-high 1,157 fans in the opener of the EVEN Hotel Bobcat Classic on Thursday night in Shroyer Gym.
Nevada (4-5) broke away from an eight-all tie early in the opening set behind a 9-1 run and captured the frame on a kill via Haylee Brown. In the second set, Montana State (4-6) trailed 11-10 before the Wolf Pack rattled off a 6-1 run to pull away, winning the set following a Bobcat blocking error. Nevada outhit Montana State .407 to .071 in the final set to win its fourth match of the season.
"The way we played was not representative of the things that we say we stand for," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "We've got to commit to doing our jobs."
The Bobcats played without the services of backup setter Maggie Rhew, along with outside hitter Elli Tufto due to injuries. Freshman setter Teagan Jaynes played sparingly coming back from injury, as well. "This is why we have 16 athletes on the roster," Houk said. "Because at some point you're going to deal with injuries. We can't suddenly stop performing like we're capable of."
Redshirt-freshman Makenzie Jackson carried a heavy load for the Bobcats taking over the setting spot from her traditional role as an opposite side hitter. The Helena native finished with a team-best six kills, while hitting .625 and dishing out 13 assists.

Middle blocker Joelie Spelts also paced the Bobcats with six kills while adding a match-high five blocks. Libero Lauren Lindseth and Madilyn Siebler each had six digs to guide MSU defensively.
