Montana State track and field flies south to the Silver State as “speed and power” take center stage in second outdoor meet of the season
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- After making a splash in their outdoor season debut with a dominant sweep of the Cat-Griz Dual last weekend in Missoula, Montana State track and field now turns their attention to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UNLV Rebel Elite Invite.
Competition begins Friday at Myron Partridge Stadium with the hammer throw, shot put, and long jump, and continues through Saturday with action in the throws, sprints, and jumps.
Montana State will travel nearly the full squad, with only the distance group hanging back in Bozeman to train.
"It's a great early season competition to go up against some high-quality competitors," head coach Lyle Weese said. "The conditions should be favorable as well being in Vegas and having warmer temperatures--they also tend to get pretty favorable winds. We should benefit from some tailwinds in the 100, 200, and hurdle races, plus the long jump and triple jump. It's a great opportunity to put up some good marks in good conditions."
The forecast is bright, with both days in Las Vegas projected to feature plenty of sun and temperatures in the upper 60s.
A full meet schedule can be viewed here, with live results available here through Finished Results Timing.
The Cats will get their first chance to go head-to-head with high-level competition this spring, matching up against schools including UNLV, Colorado State, Cal State Northridge, Northern Arizona, North Dakota, and Utah State.
"All of the event groups are up against high-quality competition," Weese said. "It's not just great conditions, but it's also great competition where there are some really quality colleges that do really well in the throws in addition to the jumps and sprints."
Montana State kickstarted their outdoor season in style on Saturday in Missoula, dominating Montana in the 90th Cat-Griz Dual.
The Bobcat men won for the 12th time in the last 14 meetings, 113-73, while the women won for the 11th time in the last 13 meetings, 119.5-69.5.
Montana State's women won 15 of 18 events, while the men won 14 of 18 events.
"I'm really proud of the work that the team put in between the indoor season ending and the outdoor season beginning," Weese said. "It's easy when you have four weeks off from competition to within that time take a step back and not keep moving forward. There's always a finality to a Big Sky Conference championship meet, and it's easy to feel like you need to take some time to reset from that—but this team didn't and we were able to start our outdoor season at a high level. We hope to continue that this weekend when they head to Las Vegas."
Montana State secured three of the four weekly awards handed out by the Big Sky Conference on Monday, with Colby Wilson earning Big Sky Men's Field Athlete of the Week, Rob McManus earning Big Sky Men's Track Athlete of the Week, and Kyla Christopher-Moody earning Big Sky Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
In the first USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings of the outdoor season, Montana State's men's steeplechase group was ranked No. 2 in the country behind only BYU. The men's hammer group was ranked No. 16, and the men's 100 meter squad was ranked No. 33.
On the women's side, the hammer group was ranked No. 16, with the women's pole vault squad ranked No. 16 and the women's 1,500 meter squad ranked No. 29.
