The Montana State women's tennis team opens play at the Big Sky Conference Tournament, Thursday morning at 9 a.m. when it meets Idaho State at the Phoenix Tennis Center in Arizona.
Montana State (10-10, 4-4) enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed, while Idaho State (10-11, 3-5) is the No. 5 seed. The Bobcats, who played in last season's league tournament for the first time in seven years, will be making its first back-to-back appearance in the postseason since accomplishing the feat in 2016 and 2017.
The Bobcats handed the Bengals a 6-1 setback in Bozeman on April 6 taking five of six singles matches in straight sets. Head Coach Suzie Woodburn looks to replicate the victory on Thursday. "We need to play with confidence."
Four Montana State players – Marta Garcia-Reboredo, Meg McCarty, Angel Bean, Hudson Hawkins- return from last season's team that dropped its first-round match 4-0 to Weber State.
"Now that we've been to the conference tournament, we know what it's like," Woodburn said. "A big thing for us last season was seeing the energy and how different it is from conference play. I think our team is prepared and ready this year. We need to play free, and we need to play to win."
McCarty, a Bozeman native, paces the Bobcats in singles and doubles. She earned All-Big Sky Conference First Team honors in singles and doubles on Wednesday. McCarty went 12-4 overall in singles action, including a 6-2 mark at No. 2. She combined with graduate transfer Jojo Bach at No. 1 doubles, where the duo went 14-2 overall and 6-0 in league play. The tandem ranked as high as #42 in the ITA Doubles rankings during the spring season.
Garcia-Reboredo (No. 1) and Hawkins (No. 6) also reached double-digit victories in singles play. Bach (No. 3), Nia Gelashvili (No. 4) and Bean (No. 5) complete MSU's singles ladder.
"We put in the work and preparation during the season," Woodburn said. "When you're prepared, you're feeling good. We know what to expect and we're going to win."
McCarty and Bach anchor MSU's No. 1 doubles spot, while Garcia-Reboredo and Hawkins play at No. 2 and Bean and Nia Gelashvili, No. 3. Garcia-Reboredo and Hawkins went 4-2 in Big Sky action.
Thursday's match starts with doubles. A team that captures two of the three contests earns the first point of the match. The team that reaches four points advances to Friday's semifinals.
"Our doubles is super strong," Woodburn said. "It would be huge to get the momentum. We play our doubles; good things are going to happen. Our goal is to get in and get out and play our best tennis and I want to start strong with the doubles. We've been doing that all year."
