Colby Wilson, Rob McManus, and Kyla Christopher-Moody earn recognition from conference after big performances at Cat-Griz Dual
FARMINGTON, Utah – Three Montana State track and field athletes earned Big Sky weekly honors after big performances at the Cat-Griz Dual Meet, the conference office announced on Monday.
Colby Wilson was named Big Sky Men's Field Athlete of the Week, Rob McManus was named Big Sky Men's Track Athlete of the Week, and Kyla Christopher-Moody was named Big Sky Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
Wilson, a graduate student from Olympia, Washington, picked up right where he left off after a record-breaking indoor season that ended at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Virginia Beach two weeks ago. On Saturday in Missoula at the Cat-Griz Dual, Wilson cleared 17-04.50 to easily win the event with the 12th-best clearance in NCAA Division I so far this spring. The four-time Big Sky champion and current Big Sky indoor record-holder leads the conference in the pole vault through the first two weeks of the outdoor slate.
McManus, a senior from Cashmere, Washington, also got his outdoor season started in earnest on Saturday running his first 3,000 meter steeplechase of the season and winning with an altitude-converted time of 8:44.71--a mark that ranks 11th in NCAA Division I this season. Just two weeks after placing 15th in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships to earn Second Team All-American honors, the current face of 'Steeple U' and two-time outdoor steeplechase All-American coasted to a quick time in the first event of the day before also placing second in the 800 meters as part of the Cats' domination in the rivalry meet.
Christopher-Moody, a graduate student from Royal Oak, Michigan, turned in a spectacular day in Missoula, winning three events and setting a new school record in the process in her outdoor season debut. The distance runner started her day at Dornblaser Field by smashing a 27-year-old school record in the 1,500 meters by nearly four seconds, clocking an altitude-converted 4:18.29. The time leapfrogged Holly Stanish, who ran 4:22.98 in 1998, and represents Christopher-Moody's third school record in her last three meets after topping the indoor school records in both the mile and 3,000 meters in February. Within the span of three hours on Saturday after her record-breaking run in the 1,500 meters, Christopher-Moody proceeded to win both the 800 meters and the 5,000 meters in Missoula, cementing a dominant display of endurance and speed.
Montana State dominated the 90th Cat-Griz Dual on Saturday, winning 113-73 on the men's side and 119.5-69.5 on the women's side.
Combined between the men and women, the Bobcats have won 23 of the last 27 duals with the Griz.
