Gelashvili Named Big Sky Player of the Week

Gelashvili’s first match as a Bobcat came at No. 3 singles, where she defeated Utah State’s Maria Ramos Garcia 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. The win clinched at 7-0 victory for MSU.
With just one week of practice under her belt, Montana State freshman standout Nia Gelashvili stepped into the Bobcat lineup and delivered two match clinching victories in singles play, and an important victory in doubles, last weekend at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
For her efforts, the product of Tbilisi, Georgia, was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week.
Gelashvili joined the Bobcat program in January coming from Israel as a juniors player in the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
"Playing college tennis is a lot different than juniors," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "It definitely was a challenge, but she came in and competed."
Gelashvili's first match as a Bobcat came at No. 3 singles, where she defeated Utah State's Maria Ramos Garcia 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. The win clinched at 7-0 victory for MSU.
"That was pretty special to see her come in and win her first match in three sets," Woodburn said. "After dropping her second set we just told her to play for the team, and that's what she did."
On Sunday, she combined with Angel Bean at No. 3 doubles where the tandem recorded a 6-3 victory over South Dakota's Natalie de Lima and Selena Bird. The win was pivotal as the Bobcats captured the opening point of the match en route to a 6-1 decision over the Coyotes.
Gelashvili clinched the match for MSU at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sorcha Caves.
"She was so excited on Sunday after the match," Woodburn laughed. "She is so happy to be a Bobcat. Coming into a program in January can be intense for a variety of reasons, but she's just molded right into our culture. And it feels like she's been her a long time."
Montana State plays at North Dakota, Feb. 14.
