Brown tallies 21 to lead Montana State in Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. – Despite a 21-point outburst from Davian Brown, the Montana State men's basketball team fell to Oral Roberts, 72-68, in a game that consisted of highs and lows for the Bobcats on Saturday.
The Bobcats led the Golden Eagles, 42-22, at the half before Oral Roberts went on a 50-point outburst to take the lead with just under five minutes to play in the second half. The Bobcats fought back in the closing minutes but were unable to overcome the deficit as Oral Roberts earned the win on their home court.
"Tonight's game was a tale of two halves," head coach Matt Logie said. "Our first-half execution and effort was outstanding, and the scoreboard reflected that. We didn't come out of halftime with the same focus and determination and learned a tough lesson about giving a team confidence, especially on the road."
Montana State held Oral Roberts scoreless for the game's first five minutes of action, building a 7-0 lead behind five points from Davian Brown. The Golden Eagles got on the board with 14:19 remaining in the half, but the Bobcats maintained a consistent lead through the midway point in the first half. A Jed Miller three-pointer helped Montana State take an 18-10 lead at the 9:16 mark before the Golden Eagles scored the next six points to cut the lead to two with 7:49 left in the half. The Cats then responded with an eight-point run of their own to increase the lead back to 10 points, 26-16. Montana State closed the final 3:17 of the first half on a 10-2 run to take a 20-point lead into the halftime break, 42-22. The Bobcats shot 55.2% from the field in the first half to the Golden Eagles' 23.3% while outrebounding Oral Roberts, 22-15, in the frame. Miller posted a team-high 11 points in the opening 20 minutes while Brown and Chris Hodges chipped in eight apiece.
Despite the Golden Eagles scoring just 22 points in the first half, the second fewest by an MSU opponent in a half this season, Oral Roberts responded with the second-highest scoring half by a Bobcat opponent this year with a 50-point surge in the final 20 minutes. Oral Roberts used a 12-0 run out of the break to cut the Bobcats' lead to eight, 42-34, with 15:43 left in regulation. The Golden Eagles continued to chip away at Montana State's lead in the following minutes and trailed by just four points, 46-42, by the 12:38 mark. Oral Roberts tied the game at 48 points apiece with just under 10 minutes to play, but Montana State regained its advantage, 53-48, as Brown knocked down a three followed by a Seth Amunrud dunk at the 8:57 mark in the half. That five-point lead marked the largest Bobcat advantage for the remainder of the game as Montana State found no answer for the Golden Eagles, who shot 60.0% from the field in the final 20 minutes. Oral Roberts took its first lead of the game on a pair of Ty Harper free throws with 4:39 to play and never looked back, leading for the remainder of the contest as Montana State ultimately fell to the Golden Eagles, 72-68.
The Bobcats shot 43.9% from the floor over the course of the game while the Golden Eagles posted a 40.0% clip. Oral Roberts outrebounded Montana State by one, 35-34, while the Bobcats held the advantage in assists, 12-10. The Golden Eagles took advantage of turnovers, scoring 26 points off of 14 MSU giveaways compared to the Bobcats' 16 points off 12 Oral Roberts turnovers.
Brown scored 13 of the Bobcats' 26 second-half points to ultimately finish with a team-high 21 in Tulsa. Miller finished the game with 16, and Hodges tallied 10 to join Brown as double-digit scorers. For Oral Roberts, Ofri Naveh (25) and Ty Harper (20) scored 45 of the team's 72 points to pace the Golden Eagles at the Mabee Center.
The Bobcats return to action in Corvalis, Ore., next Saturday, Dec. 13, when they take on Oregon State at Gill Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. MT, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
