McMahon tallies 17 points to lead the Bobcats against the Beavers
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Montana State men's basketball team battled close with Oregon State for much of Saturday's contest at Gill Coliseum but ultimately fell to the Beavers, 67-57, in Corvallis.
The Bobcats trailed by just two points, 29-27, at halftime, but were outscored by the Beavers, 38-30, in the second half as Oregon State came away with the victory. Redshirt senior Patrick McMahon enjoyed a bounce-back performance on Saturday, tallying 17 points to lead the Cats in scoring for the third time in four games.
"I thought our guys battled today, but you have to credit Oregon State," head coach Matt Logie said. "They have tremendous length and make shooting a high percentage very difficult on you. We've made some improvement in key areas like the offensive glass and rebounding margin that we won today, and that will be critical for us moving forward, especially on nights the ball doesn't go down like we'd like on offense. Pat played a very solid and efficient game, as he has most of the season."
Jeremiah Davis tallied the first six Bobcat points leading into the opening media timeout, and Patrick McMahon added five as the two guards combined for the first 11 points of the game for Montana State. Montana State trailed, 12-11, with 12 minutes left in the first half, keeping the contest close despite Oregon State leading for the whole contest thus far. The Bobcats trailed by no more than five for much of the first half before Oregon State knocked down back-to-back shots to take a six-point lead, 21-15, with 6:27 left in the first half. From that point, the Bobcats battled back to take the lead, using a 10-3 run over the next three minutes to put themselves in front for the first time, 25-24, with 3:13 left. The Bobcats held the Beavers for just over six minutes before a Jorge Diaz Graham three-point play helped Oregon State take a 29-27 lead into halftime. McMahon led the Cats with nine points in the first half while Jed Miller and Jeremiah Davis chipped in six apiece.
Oregon State added another three-point play coming out of halftime to lead, 32-27, and the two teams traded buckets for the next several minutes as the Bobcats cut the Beavers' lead to three, 39-36, at the 15:30 mark. Coming out of the media timeout, Oregon State's Yaak Yaak went on an 8-0 run by himself to give the Beavers their largest lead of the game, 47-36, with 12:33 remaining in regulation. The Bobcats clawed their way back into the game with a 6-0 run starting at the 7:55 mark as McMahon knocked down a jumper, Jaden Steppe turned a Miller steal into a dunk, and Chris Hodges made a layup to cut the deficit to just two points, 53-51, with 5:47 left in the contest. However, that was the closest the Bobcats would come as the Beavers responded with a 10-2 run to balloon their lead to 63-53 with 2:02 remaining. The Beavers ultimately sealed the victory, 67-57, to improve to 6-5 on the season while the Bobcats fell to 4-7 on the year.
Montana State shot 36.8% from the field to Oregon State's 42.2% and were limited to just 6-of-25 (24.0%) from three-point range in Saturday's contest. The Bobcats won the rebounding battle, 34-33 and turned 11 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points.
McMahon led the Bobcats with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting, seven rebounds, and two assists while adding one steal. Davis chipped in nine points and four rebounds, and Hodges added eight points, six rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block.
Montana State concludes its three-game road trip at Cal Poly on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 8 p.m. MT on ESPN+. The Bobcats will then conclude 2025 in Worthington Arena against Northwest on Monday, Dec. 22, at 1 p.m. (ESPN+).
