Amunrud tallies 16 points, McMahon scores 24 to lead Montana State against St. Thomas
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Seth Amunrud played hometown hero in his Bobcat debut on Wednesday night, knocking down a go-ahead three with 4:50 remaining in regulation and adding two more to help the Montana State men's basketball team pull away in an 82-74 win over St. Thomas in Worthington Arena as part of the Big Sky-Summit Challenge.
Amunrud shot 6-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-8 from three, while adding four steals in his Division I debut. He joined a trio of other Bobcats in scoring in double figures against the Tommies as Patrick McMahon tallied 24 points for his second-straight 20-point outing, Jed Miller scored a season-high 18 points, and Davian Brown added 12.
"I can't say enough about Seth," head coach Matt Logie said. "I'm getting emotional because of what he's been through this fall. First of all, he grew up here. He dreamt of being a Bobcat his whole life. Had a great summer, a great fall, was firmly in the rotation, and then had a bad ankle sprain that took him out for about seven weeks. By the time he was cleared, our rotations had solidified. Guys were playing well. We have so much confidence in him – didn't want to waste a year of limited opportunity, and you never know what's going to happen – but as of a week ago, he was going to take a redshirt. And then we had some injuries occur, and we're like, 'Hey, we reserved the right to ask you back this year.' And we sat down with him yesterday after we got some more information on our needs, and he was like, 'I'm excited. I'm ready. Let's do this.' And, man, you don't have to get ready if you stay ready. And that's really a testament to Seth. He's just such a worker. He's got a great attitude. To come in in your first game and have that type of confidence says a lot about what he's done to prepare himself for this moment."
The Tommies jumped out to a 7-0 run early in the first half, but the Bobcats responded with a pair of threes to put themselves right back in the game, 7-6, at the 16:43 mark in the first frame. St. Thomas increased their lead back to four, 13-9, before McMahon and Brown combined to go on a 9-0 run to put the Bobcats in front, 18-13. Montana State maintained the lead until the 5:22 mark in the first half when St. Thomas' Carter Bjerke sunk a three, but a short 5-0 Bobcat run over the next two minutes allowed the Bobcats to regain the lead, 32-29, with just over three minutes to play. Montana State did not trail for the remainder of the half and entered the break with a 40-37 lead. Brown (11 points), McMahon (10), and Miller (9) combined for 30 of the Bobcats' 40 first-half points as the Cats shot 13-of-28 (46.4%) from the field in the frame, including 7-of-16 from three (43.8%), while knocking down 7-of-7 free throws.
The Tommies came out of the locker room with a strong response, opening the second half on a 6-0 run to regain the lead, 43-40. An Amunrud jumper and Miller three allowed the Cats to respond a couple minutes later, putting Montana State back in front, 47-45, at the 16:12 mark. After St. Thomas tied the game at 47 with a pair of free throws in response, the Bobcats went on another 9-0 run, sparked by an Amunrud three-pointer and powered by six-straight points by McMahon as Montana State expanded its lead to 56-47 with 13:35 to play. A 10-0 run by the Tommies allowed St. Thomas to take a 60-57 advantage at the 9:32 mark, and the lead fluctuated between the two teams for the next four minutes, with St. Thomas holding a 67-63 lead at the 5:50 mark. Miller then sparked the game-deciding 9-0 run with a pullup jumper, followed by a pair of Amunrud threes and a Hodges free throw as the Bobcats took the lead for good, 72-67 with 3:27 left in regulation. The Tommies cut the lead to as low as three points, 72-69, on the next basket, but came no closer as Montana State closed the game on a 19-7 run to secure the 82-74 win at home.
Montana State took care of the ball in the contest, committing just seven turnovers while scoring 18 points off 14 giveaways by St. Thomas. The Cats recorded 10 steals and tallied 13 second-chance points to St. Thomas' two.
McMahon led all players with 24 points and five assists while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Miller shot 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-8 from three, also contributing three rebounds, three assists, and one steal in his 18-point outburst. Amunrud posted 16 points and a team-high four steals in his sensational debut while Brown posted 12 points and four rebounds. Amunrud and Jeremiah Davis combined for seven of Montana State's 10 steals, with Davis adding three swipes of his own to tie his career high while also tallying seven points, four rebounds, and two assists.
