“We had great production from everyone,” Binford said. “Portland has had a lot of success and play a similar style to us. They are very well coached, are a great team and play in a strong conference. This was really a great win for the program.”
Taylee Chirrick and Brooke Fatupaito each gave Montana State career performances on Friday night as the Bobcats recorded an 86-72 win over Portland in the Chiles Center.
Chirrick, a sophomore from Roberts, led Montana State (2-0) with a career-high 23 points, connecting on eight-of-10 from the field and seven-of-nine from the line. In addition, she stuffed the stat sheet with a career-high seven assists, while posting six steals and three rebounds.
"Taylee was absolutely relentless," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "She got into a little bit of foul trouble but did a great job managing herself throughout the game."
Fatupaito, a junior from Billings, registered a career-best 14 points and nine rebounds.
"Brooke had her best game as a Bobcat," Binford said. "She played unbelievable defense and was explosive with her rebounding. She is really starting to show out."
The opening 10 minutes of the contest was unruly as both teams combined for 15 turnovers and 15 fouls. However, MSU outscored Portland (1-1) 12-2 in points off turnovers.
"We set the tone early," Binford said. "And did a nice job being disruptive."
Leading by five heading into the second quarter, the Bobcats used an 11-0 run midway through the frame capped by a Brianne Bailey layup to give MSU a 42-31 advantage.
Montana State held a 47-34 lead at intermission as the Bobcats shot 50% from the field. Chirrick, Fatupaito and Addison Harris all reached double figure scoring in the first half.
The Bobcats took its largest lead of the contest at 63-43 with 44-seconds remaining in the third quarter on a layup from Harris.
Portland closed to within 80-68 in the waning moments of the fourth period, before Chirrick and Harris converted back-to-back layups to secure the double-digit victory.

Aside from Chirrick and Fatupaito, Harris also tallied double figures with 18 points, connecting on seven-of-11 from the floor. Bailey, a freshman from St. Anthony, Idaho, recorded 10 points, while adding four assists and three steals.
Freshman guard Jamison Philip pestered the Pilots for a good chunk of the game, and finished with eight points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists, while drawing nine fouls.
"Jamison is the player you hate to have to go up against," Binford said. "She has the ball pressure of a seasoned veteran."
