Taylee Chirrick scored a game-high 19 points to lead four Bobcats in double digits as MSU handed Minot State a 76-37 setback in front of 4,877 energetic youngsters taking part in MSU’s annual school day game in Worthington Arena, Monday morning.
Montana State sophomore Taylee Chirrick scored a game-high 19 points to lead four Bobcats in double digits as MSU handed Minot State a 76-37 setback in front of 4,877 energetic youngsters taking part in MSU's annual school day game in Worthington Arena, Monday morning.
"It seems like school day gets louder every year," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "I want to thank all the schools for making it work, all our volunteers, our police department, our marketing department for organizing the event and making it special for both the players and community.
"Our players love school day," Binford added. "I saw signs for Mrs. Fatupaito (Bobcat guard Brooke Fatupaito) and Taylee Chirrick. We a have a lot of players that have worked in the school system as part of their majors, so it's pretty neat to see the connection between the two."
Montana State (3-0) found itself down 12-9 at the midway mark of the opening quarter as Minot State hit four consecutive 3-pointers. The Bobcats closed out the period on a 12-4 run, owning a 21-13 advantage heading into the second frame.
"That was first game we've had where the pace wasn't super up tempo from the start," Binford said. "We've got to create the pace we want to play. Minot did a great job changing defenses, but we also didn't do a good job of disrupting early. I felt like they really stretched us on the defensive end and they hit some shots."
The Bobcat defense held the Beavers to seven points in the second quarter and entered intermission with a 34-20 cushion. Fatupaito, Brianne Bailey and Addison Harris each notched seven points in the opening 20 minutes.
MSU shot 60% from the field in the third quarter and connected on four 3-pointers to put the game away. The Bobcats held the Beavers to just three points in the final frame.
"I think the second and fourth quarters showed our legs and the depth of our bench and that's something that we have to have consistently throughout a game," Binford said. "And we're at our best when we have good balance scoring on the offensive end."
Aside from Chirrick, also in double figures were Harris 14, Bailey 13, and Fatupaito 11.
The Bobcats held a 51-34 advantage under the boards. Ella Johnson pulled down a team high eight rebounds, while Fatupaito collected seven. MSU finished with 19 steals and forced 27 Minot State turnovers, which were converted into thirty points.
