Guards mark the first two members of Montana State’s 2026 signing class
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State men's basketball program announced the signing of Daniel "DJ" Johnson and Hale Hansen for the 2026-27 season, cementing the first two members of the Bobcats' 2026 signing class.
Johnson and Hansen will each enter Montana State as freshmen in the fall of 2026, adding to a strong group of Bobcat guards while providing young talent for the program. Johnson will join the Bobcats from Auburn, Wash., while Hansen hails from Phoenix, Ariz.
"We are very excited to welcome both DJ Johnson and Hale Hansen to the Montana State basketball family," head coach Matt Logie said. "DJ and Hale were identified early on in our process as young men who had the passion for the game and competing that will make them terrific fits here at MSU."
Johnson, an all-around player out of Auburn High School, averaged 18.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.2 steals per game during his junior season for the Trojans. He was named to the North Puget Sound League 4A First Team after guiding the second-seeded Trojans to the Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association (WIAA) District 3/4 title. Johnson earned Class 4A All-State Tournament Second Team honors in 2025 and was honored by the Tacoma News Tribune as a member of the All-Area Boys' Basketball First Team during his junior season. Johnson is no stranger to winning, competing on the No. 1 team in the state during his sophomore season at Auburn and guiding the Trojans to sixth place in the 3A State Championship at Tacoma Dome as a freshman. Johnson earned the 2024 West Central III Sportsmanship Award as a junior. As a club player, Johnson competed in the Friends of Hoop Seattle Elite Youth Champions League during the spring of 2024 and 2025.
"DJ is an aggressive playmaking guard who really loves the game," Logie said. "DJ possesses a combination of shooting ability, ball handling, and playmaking that the guards in our basketball family have thrived with. DJ has been well coached at a highly successful program at Auburn High School under Ryan Hanson, and his game will only continue to grow due to his passion for the game and commitment to development."
Hansen enters his final high school season at Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, Ariz., where he helped the Broncos win their first state championship in 2025. A strong two-way player, he was named the Broncos' defensive player of the year as a sophomore. Hansen attended Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas, during his freshman season. He played on the Arizona Select 17U team this past summer, averaging 12.3 points per game on 53% shooting from the field with a 44% clip from three-point range, as well as 4.5 rebounds per game.
"Hale was someone who immediately stood out of the crowd to our staff due to his tremendous motor and competitive energy," Logie said. "Hale can impact the game in so many ways – he is an aggressive defender who can guard multiple positions, protects the rim at a high level as a forward, rebounds, and gets out in transition. He is an aggressive slasher and cutter on offense while also possessing a highly efficient 3pt shot."
