Wilson leads Bobcat trio in Missoula with a 1-over 217 at The Ranch Club
MISSOULA Mont. --- Montana State golfer Ashleigh Wilson earned the best finish of her young collegiate career on Tuesday, tying for second at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate to lead three Bobcat individuals competing in Missoula this week.
Wilson carded rounds of 74-72-71 during the two-day tournament to finish the week at 1-over 217. The native of Denver, Colo., was one of four golfers to shoot under par in Tuesday's final round, climbing six places over the course of the day to secure her runner-up finish. Additionally, Sailor Graham added rounds of 75-76-73 to tie for 15th with an overall score of 224 while Lauren Nau carded a 228 (76-76-76) to tie for 22nd at the Montana-hosted tournament.
"I'm proud of these three for battling this week in Missoula," head coach Brittany Basye said. "Ashleigh's -1 today was a great final round. She gave herself a great chance to win the golf tournament and battled to the very end. Sailor battled it out today as well, playing under the weather and fighting for each stroke. Lauren's consistent play is encouraging. She's a good player with lots of potential. It's fun to get a second-place individual finish this week. Ashleigh earned it."
Teeing off from the ninth hole, Wilson played a consistent round, sinking eight-straight pars before carding a birdie on hole 17. She then bogeyed on hole 18 before adding three pars and a birdie over the next four holes. Wilson posted a bogey on hole 5 followed by a birdie and two-consecutive pars to conclude her round at 1-under 71. The freshman earned her second top-10 finish of the season and moved into the team lead in par-or-better rounds (6) with her performance in Missoula.
Graham also posted her strongest round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a 1-over 73 in the third round to tie for seventh on the day and 15th over 54 holes. The freshman teed off of hole 8 in the morning, shooting par-or-better on six of the first seven holes before a stretch of bogeys toward the end of the back nine. Graham then closed the round strong with a par on hole 1 followed by three-straight birdies and a trio of pars to conclude the tournament with a total score of 224.
Nau finished the tournament with a trio of 76s to secure her share of 22nd place. She opened Tuesday's round with a birdie on hole 7 before posting a string of bogeys heading into the back nine. Nau then sunk four-straight pars to conclude the back nine and added a pair of birdies on holes 2 and 6 to wrap up the round.
Weber State's Braylyn Bayer earned medalist honors with a 2-under 214, besting teammate Emily Song, Idaho's Zoe Newell, and Wilson by three strokes (217). Portland State's Payten Shimizu carded a 218 to round out the top-five finishers in Missoula.
Weber State shot an 880 over three rounds to take the team title over Portland State (886) and Idaho (887). With three golfers in action, Montana State only competed for the individual title at The Ranch Club.
