Experienced transfer from Washington State adds size and shooting to Montana State backcourt
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Montana State men's basketball added a proven Power Five guard out of the transfer portal on Tuesday, with head coach Matt Logie announcing the signing of Jabe Mullins.
Mullins, a graduate transfer who has played in 107 career games, comes to Montana State after two years at Washington State (2022-24) and two years at Saint Mary's (2020-22), where he was a part of two NCAA Tournaments and two trips to the NIT.
"We are thrilled to be adding Jabe Mullins to the MSU Basketball family," Logie said. "Jabe is someone our staff has followed for years, dating back to his prolific high school career under Jason Griffith alongside Tyler Patterson at Mount Si High School and continuing to his time at both Saint Mary's and Washington State."
Mullins played in 24 games this past season as Washington State enjoyed their best year since 2008, going 25-10 and advancing to the Round of 32 at the NCAA Tournament. The guard scored a season-high 13 points in 26 minutes in a win over Boise State on Dec. 21.
"Simply put, Jabe is a winner," Logie said. "Jabe possesses tremendous size for a playmaking guard--he is a proven shooter and terrific decision maker with the ball in his hands. We know that the best version of Jabe Mullins is still yet to be unlocked at the college level and can't wait to see it in the Blue and Gold next year!"
In 2022-23, Mullins played in 30 games for Washington State, starting eight and averaging 8.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. The 6-foot-6 guard shot 85-of-194 (43.8%) from beyond the arc, leading the team and ranking third in the Pac-12 in three-point percentage. In games he started, Mullins averaged 11.6 points per game.
In a win over Eastern Washington on Nov. 21, 2022, Mullins knocked down eight 3-pointers while scoring a career-high 26 points with seven rebounds.
In 2021-22, Mullins played in all 34 games for Saint Mary's as the Gaels went 26-8 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where they beat Indiana in the opening round. The then-sophomore connected on 37.3% of his attempts from beyond the arc while playing just under ten minutes a game.
In 2020-21, Mullins saw action in 19 games for Saint Mary's while starting 11 times as a true freshman.
As teammates with current Bobcat Tyler Patterson at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie, Washington, Mullins was a four-time All-KingCo 4A selection, two-time MVP, state tournament MVP, and the WIAA Player of the Year on the way to being the No. 1 ranked recruit in the state of Washington in the Class of 2020.
During his senior year at Mount Si, Mullins averaged 19.2 points, 6.8 assists, 6.6 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.2 blocks and set a Class 4A state tournament record for assists in a game with 14.
With Mullins and Patterson leading the way, Mount Si won the school's first state title since 1977.
Mullins joins guard Bryce Zephir (Salt Lake CC) and guard Trap Johnson (Belton HS) as Montana State signees for 2024-25.
Montana State is coming off its third consecutive Big Sky Tournament championship and third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The "Golden Age" of Bobcat Basketball has included the Big Sky's first three-peat champion since 1970-73 and three of the Bobcats' six trips all-time to the NCAA Tournament, including this past season, when the Cats took down Montana in the Big Sky Championship game to cap a magical postseason run, booking their ticket to the Big Dance as the lowest seed to win the Big Sky Tournament since 1994.
