MSU tied for sixth through 18 holes in Arizona, but sit just two strokes back from third
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -- Scarlet Weidig paced the Cats through the first 18 holes at the 2024 Big Sky Women's Golf Championship on Monday, carding a 1-over 72 at The Wigwam Blue course in Litchfield Park, Arizona.
Montana State sits in a tie with Northern Colorado for sixth after the first day at the conference tournament, shooting an 11-over 295.
Sacramento State leads the field through the opening round, carding a 2-under 282. Weber State is in second at 4-over 288, while Northern Arizona and Montana are tied for third place at 9-over 293.
Just five strokes separate third place from tenth place at the Big Sky Championship heading into Tuesday, which head coach Brittany Basye called "moving day" on the golf course.
"These ladies are gritty and we will be out early ready to compete and play this golf course," Basye said. "They can do it."
Weidig, a junior from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, was at 1-under and tied for second individually heading into the 14th hole, but will head into Tuesday's round tied for 12th overall.
Hannah Boraas, a freshman from Alexandria, Minnesota, bounced back to finish with a 2-over 73 for the day, and is tied for 16th. Consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th holes before three straight pars to end the afternoon put the young Bobcat right back into the swing of things in her first-ever collegiate championship round.
Lauren Greeny, a sophomore from Pullman, Washington, is tied for 20th individually after carding a 3-over 74. Greeny tallied two birdies over her final four holes to gather some momentum heading into Tuesday morning.
The Cats will get their next round of 18 holes started at 7:20 a.m. PT/8:20 a.m. MT, paired up with Northern Colorado for the day's action.
Eva Heinz will tee off at 7:20 a.m. PT, with Montoya (7:30), Greeny (7:40), Boraas (7:50), and Weidig (8:00) following behind.
