Montana State finishes 14th at Golf Club of Estrella, will stay in Phoenix area ahead of the start of conference championships on Monday
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Montana State wrapped up action at the Bobcat Desert Classic on Wednesday, finishing 14th in the final tournament of the spring before the Big Sky Championships kick off on Monday.
Scarlet Weidig earned her third top-20 finish of the season, tallying a 54-hole score of 1-over par 217 (73-70-74). The redshirt junior from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, tied for 16th in a talented field of 98.
Lauren Greeny tied for 45th thanks to a final round score of 1-over par 73, giving her a 224 for the tournament (75-76-73). Hannah Boraas, who has come on strong over the last few weeks, tied for 60th, shooting 226 for the week (75-75-76).
"Not the team finish we wanted, but lots of takeaways that we will use to prep for the Big Sky Championships," head coach Brittany Basye said. It was nice to see Scarlet [Weidig] around par this tournament and [Lauren] Greeny one-over today."
Grand Canyon took the team title on Wednesday with a 54-hole score of 11-under par. Seattle U was the runner-up at 8-under par, while Wyoming and Cal Baptist tied for third at 7-over par.
Seattle U's Rivekka Jumagulova finished as the top individual (-12), with GCU's Costanza Guerrero (-8), and Gonzaga's Grace Lee (-4) rounding out the top three.
The Cats now turn their attention to the Big Sky Championships, held at The Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Arizona, and which begin Monday, April 15 and continue through Wednesday, April 17 with three rounds of 18 holes.
"Our short games will need to be spot on for the Wigwam Blue course," Basye said. "The greens are elevated and look like tabletops so accuracy and knowing our landing spots will be very important."
Montana State finished second at last season's conference championships, their highest finish since winning the tournament in 1995.
The Bobcats returned four of their five scorers from last year's Big Sky Championships, with Scarlet Weidig, Lauren Greeny, and Maddie Montoya joined this year by freshmen Eva Heinz and Hannah Boraas.
"I am excited to see how these ladies bring it Monday morning when it's time to tee it," Basye said. "Conference is a different beast and one that means a lot more. We work for this tournament all season long—we can't wait to get started."
In the only tournament this season that saw all ten Big Sky squads compete, the Big Sky '54 for IX' in Utah on September 25-26, Montana State placed third as a team, with Scarlet Weidig winning the individual title (-9). Maddie Montoya tied for 12th (-1).
