Freshman sprinter asserts himself in 200 and 400 to highlight final day of action at The Podium
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Jett Grundy's performances in the sprints headlined Montana State track and field's final day of action at the Riverfront Invitational and Multis in Spokane, Washington, on Saturday, as the Bobcats closed competition at the three-day meet.
Full results can be viewed here.
Grundy, a freshman from North Queensland, Australia, ran a blazing 47.01 in the men's 400 meters to win the event and cap his meet on a high note. The time is the second-fastest in school history, behind only the 46.72 ran by Dan Johnson in 2008. It's the 45th fastest mark in NCAA Division I this season, and comes in just Grundy's fourth-ever collegiate meet.
The win in the 400 meters followed up an eye-popping 21.51 in the 200 meters earlier, also the second-fastest time in school history. Running in the far outside lane in his heat, Grundy powered forward for an eighth-place finish in an event that featured 65 competitors.
This season, Grundy now owns the fastest times in the Big Sky in both the 200 and 400.
Elsewhere, Jaeden Wolff continued her stellar season by placing third in the women's 200 meters, running a 24.00 flat to improve her standing as the second-fastest woman in MSU history in that event.
Wolff also qualified for the 60 meter final and placed second with a time of 7.46, just a few hundredths of a second behind her school record time of 7.43. She's now third in the Big Sky in the 60 meters and second in the 200 meters this season.
Over at the pole vault pit, Colby Wilson picked up another meet win, clearing 5.36 meters (17-07.00).
In the shot put, Talon Holmquist placed third on the men's side with a throw of 54-00.00, and Sydney Brewster placed fifth on the women's side with a toss of 46-11.00.
Back on the track, Madison Smith took third in the 800 meters and Caroline Hawkes took fourth in the 400 meters.
The bulk of Montana State's distance group did not make the trip, staying back to train and rest ahead of next week's home meet back in Bozeman.
