Montana State’s forte of getting to the free throw line didn’t appear until early in the final frame.
Montana went to its strength connecting on 14-of-27 from beyond the three-point arc, en route to a 72-50 win over Montana State on Saturday afternoon in Dahlberg Arena.
Montana (17-7, 9-4) went six-of-nine from long distance in the opening half to build a 38-29 advantage at intermission. Montana State (14-12, 8-5) got on track midway through the opening quarter, overcoming an early deficit shooting 44.8% from the field sparked by Marah Dykstra's 10 points.
"Montana shot the ball really well today," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "We were not our disrupted selves for a complete game. Our kids are battling, and I thought we were really well prepared, played hard, but this was Montana's night."
The Lady Griz outscored the Bobcats 18-9 in the third period using a late 9-0 run to secure the win.
"When your defense is not on, you make the three-ball more of a rhythm look for them, and we created quite a bit of that," Binford said. "Credit them, they moved the ball very efficiently."
Montana State's forte of getting to the free throw line didn't appear until early in the final frame. The Bobcats entered the contest second in the Big Sky shooting 18.2 free throws per game. MSU finished six-of-nine at the line, all coming in the final nine minutes.
"When you look at the difference in styles, for us we've got to get to the foul line," Binford said. "And we've got to be a lot tougher there. They were swarming on the interior, but we need to be a little more patient and have more composure."
Dykstra led the Bobcats with 13 points, while Taylor Janssen and Issy Bunyan added ten and nine, respectively. Dykstra also guided MSU under the glass with a game-high nine rebounds.
Dani Bartsch led Montana with 14 points and eight rebounds.
