“I’m very happy with the layers we are putting in place down the stretch,” said MSU head coach Matt Houk.
Despite a career-high 21 kills from redshirt freshman Karli Heidemann, and outhitting Eastern Washington .206 to .200, Montana State came up short as the Eagles recorded a 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11 decision over the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at Reese Court.
The match featured 27 ties and seven lead changes en route to a fifth set. Eastern Washington (11-12, 7-6) held a 10-9 lead in the final frame and an Eagle hitting miscue looked to even the contest at 10-all. However, EWU challenged the call of a touch, and the point was overturned giving the Eagles an 11-9 advantage.
A kill by Kalista Lukovich pushed the margin to three points, before Jourdain Kamps closed the Bobcats to within 13-11. EWU closed out the match with a block and a Bobcat hitting error.
"I'm very happy with the layers we are putting in place down the stretch," said MSU head coach Matt Houk.
Heidemann, an outside hitter from Diller, Neb., hit .359 making just seven errors on 39 swings. Also posting double digit kills were Madilyn Siebler 17 and Kamps 15. Jordan Radick chipped in six kills, while hitting .455.
Kamps, a fifth-year standout from Ennis, added nine digs and a team best seven blocks.
"We got some great offensive performances out of Karli, Jourdain and Jordan," Houk said. "We also had Audrey (Hofer) play a position she has never played before, and she performed wonderfully."
Hofer stepped into MSU's serve-receive and passed 18 balls, while adding eight digs.
Defensively, Lauren Lindseth guided MSU with 24 digs, while Nellie Stevenson added 11. Stevenson also dished out 48 assists.
Montana State closes out its regular season at home beginning on Thursday, Nov. 14 against Portland State.
