Bobcats Host Portland State, Sacramento State

Montana State winds up its 2024 regular season schedule with three home matches, beginning Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. against Portland State in Shroyer Gym.
NEXT UP: Montana State winds up its 2024 regular season schedule with three home matches, beginning Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. against Portland State in Shroyer Gym. The Bobcats will host Sacramento State on Saturday at 7 p.m. and will honor its five seniors following the match.
QUICK SETS: After splitting a pair of road matches last week- defeating Idaho 3-1 and dropping a 3-2 decision at Eastern Washington - the Bobcats are 8-16 overall and 6-7 in Big Sky play. Portland State enters Thursday's match 6-17 overall and 6-7 in league play. The Vikings dropped a pair of road matches last week losing at Northern Arizona (3-0) and Northern Colorado (3-0). Sacramento State is 16-9 overall and 9-3 in Big Sky action. The Hornets play at Montana on Thursday afternoon before making the trek to Bozeman.
SCOUTING REPORT: Portland State is 6-17 overall and 6-7 in Big Sky play after dropping matches at Northern Arizona (3-0) and Northern Colorado (3-0), last weekend. Thursday's meeting between PSU and MSU is the only one of the regular season. The road remains a puzzle for the Vikings. Their losses last week dropped PSU to 1-5 in road conference matches this season versus a 4-2 record at home. Makayla Lewis became only the second Viking in the Big Sky era to reach 1,000-career kills and 1,000-career digs last week. Sacramento State is 16-9 overall and 9-3 in Big Sky play. Sac State plays at Montana, Thursday afternoon.
AMONG THE NATION'S ELITE: As a team Montana State ranks 33rd in the country with 242.5 total blocks. The Bobcats are 35th overall averaging 2.55 blocks per contest. Last week MSU opponents outblocked the Cats 2.22 to 1.67 per set. The nation's top blocking program to date is Wisconsin at 3.09 bps. Individually, Jourdain Kamps leads the Bobcats averaging 1.24 per set, followed by Jordan Radick 1.21, and Joelie Spelts .89. Kamps and Radick rank 57th and 69th in the nation in blocks per set, respectively. In Big Sky matches, MSU has three of the top five blockers in the league. Kamps is 3rd at 1.33 bps, Radick, 4th, 1.27 bps, and sophomore Joelie Spelts, 6th, 1.10.
ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE: According to the NCAA rankings this week, Montana State's 2024 schedule is the 84th toughest in the nation and tops in the Big Sky Conference. The Bobcats have faced three teams ranked in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Division I Women's Volleyball Top 25 poll - #2 Nebraska, #9 Arizona State and (RV) Washington.
PACKING THE PLACE: Montana State is averaging 946 fans this season (seven matches). On Oct. 12 against Idaho, the Bobcats saw a season-high 1,347 fans pack Shroyer Gym. MSU is currently ranked 77th in the nation for attendance, ahead of programs such as Clemson, Florida State, and Alabama. Last fall, MSU finished 65th in the nation averaging 1,115 fans per game. On Sept. 30, 2022, Montana State set a Big Sky and State of Montana record when 6,457 fans jammed Worthington Arena.
HORSESHOES & HAND GRENADES: Thirteen of Montana State's 95 sets played have gone to extra points. The Bobcats are 7-6 in those matches. MSU's last extra point contest (27-29) came in the second set against Idaho State on Nov. 2.
